If a business has problem employees the business has a management problem. ANY problem a business has is a management problem.

I've worked for myself now for the last 4.5 yrs, but I do notice I can never get people to answer the phone or call back at times. Yet when I run errands, I see people everywhere not really working. What's up? I like being busy and working hard, but America is definitely not working like it used to.
Make American Work Again.

It’s because “they don’t need to be in the office”

Seems like some hiring processes should change.

Why have people become so lazy and think they work so hard, when everytime you turn around they are on their phone or outside smoking or in the bathroom for 30 minutes, and when they mess something up they just shrug it off like no big deal and then act like they deserve 150 k a year,
Depends on the job, mine requires thinking, and I tend to get creative answers while taking a shite or reading dumbass reddit posts.

ever since covid brought WFH to the masses (at least temporarily), so many people just leave work early now for not so great reasons
I'd bet at least half of all office jobs don't actually matter at all and those people leaving early has little to no effect on their employers bottom line.

It's the leaders responsibility to tell people they should do the work that very apparently needs to be done?
I mean, yea. That's kind of the role of a manager. If they aren't equipped or wanting to do that they shouldn't be managing subordinates.

funny story.
my wife has (had?) one. spoiled rotten. constantly lying on her time card. terrible at her job. (but because the labor force is so bad, had to keep her on) spent more time texting than working.
was recently caught running around on her husband.
now today, was sent home for supposedly using some of the in-office meds before work to get "relaxed"
the poor employees generally weed themselves out, eventually.

Look, I think having "core work hours" from 10-3 can be reasonable, but if you're doing a productive job, who cares if you leave at 3:30 to take little Jimmy to his baseball practice or whatever?

realizing of course, that there are some jobs (service, health care providers etc) that, if you're not working, you're not earning (or billing)

Nahhhhhh.
Blaming the leader for poor individual performance is a lazy arse way to avoid dealing with people who suck. Its bullshite invented by HR to avoid having to fire people. Work isn't college, and unless you're fine never advancing in life at all, sitting around and waiting to be given assignments and doing only those assignments is a shite way to be.
When a leader has a team, and 85% of them are kicking arse and the balance sucks, it ain't the leader who needs a talking to. It's the 15% who need to go but will blame leadership for not being given direction, not teaching them, etc etc. The other 85% figured it out. When the whole group is a cluster frick, sure, that's a leadership issue. When select individuals suck, it's because they suck and need to go.

Listen Kevin, I don't need you to tell me how to do my job.

I realize that, but at least answer the phone if you're a salesperson. If you're at home or wherever you are. I'm calling to find out more information. I've dropped a lot of products because I was never called back. In general, however, I agree with not having to be in the office. Just follow up. Lot of time wasted in an office environment.

Prime example of a lot of today's work force. We aren't that far removed from covid where we were just trying to have a warm body in positions

This is highly dependent on if said management is given the tools to actually manage effectively.
You can only "coach" someone so much.
