Had some major breathing issues and my face turned blue. Went to the ER and they took one look at me and rushed me right in.
Fell and broke my arm and went to the ER. Sat there in some major pain for 7 1/2 hours before they took an xray and determined that it was in fact broke. Gave me some kinda pain med and put it in a 40lb splint. Took another 2 weeks to get an appt with a Orthopedic Dr where they took the boat anchor off and put it in a regular cast.

Lady on the side of me says she’s been here four hours —- no one here “looks emergent”.
It is free care.

For every actually sick or injured person who enters an ER, there are 10 other people who are there to waste everyone’s time.

I have sympathy for stuff like that and wish there was more incentive for primary care providers to see Medicare/Medicaid patients.

The reimbursement isn’t there. To survive with Medicare/Medicaid patients, you would have to see an insane amount of patients daily.

Then you get into the situation where people are pissed that you aren’t spending enough time with them because you have to see 20+ in a day.

Any reason why the previous facility did not process a direct admit / ER to ER transfer?

Yes. Small local hospital and no neurologist on staff. Apparently my dad had been having a headache for days but he's not a complainer. My brother who lives in the same town made him go to the doctor on Monday and they attributed it to a sinus infection and an inner ear problem.

Today when he still had a headache my brother called his family doc and they ordered the CT. It showed a bleed although I wasn't told where it actually is. So the went to Lafayette General --- I'm concerned as the neuro looked at the scan but not him (ER doc did) and they d/c him to home with orders for a follow up CT Monday.

They're glad to go home -- I'd have been asking for observation but I'm only their daughter and not a doctor. I'm trusting them.

Sadly I have to say it was UF Health in Jax. I worked for almost 40yrs in my life but lost my job with Ma Bell after 27yrs. So I had to apply for help. I think I deserve this help because I didn't sit on my arse and expect the government to support me my whole life. Just waiting til Sept of 2019 to start getting my Social Security if I live that long.

In my opinion that's what it's there for. Sometimes we need help --- but those who don't try to ever help themselves I take issue with.

not saying this isn't true, but it's difficult for me (as an ER RN) to comprehend this. if a brain bleed was confirmed by a CT, the smaller hospital should have arranged transportation via a private ambulance and gone right to the treatment area (not waiting room)

were you discharged and told to go by car to another hospital?

Not to be a dick but lower back pain isn’t gonna kill you. Yea it hurts but a slipped disc is way down on their list of priorities. Emergency means life or limb at risk, not how much ______ hurts

Well I’m an hour and a half away from their home but they went to the hospital where they live this am for the ct and then went home. Understood my mom to say that they were on the way home and got a call and were told to go to lLaf General ER. I found it quite odd myself but by the time I was called by anyone they were half way to Lafayette (50 minutes or so from their home).

Sounds like they got triaged out and it wasn’t an emergency.

They goto the ER, wait 6 hours, then waste the doctors time just to get some ibuprofen or a pregnancy test for free so they can buy more candy crush tokens and cigarettes

To be fair, humerus and femur breaks are very serious, though people often think of them as just a broken bone. It's not the same as breaking a bone in your forearm when you're a kid and you get a neat cast for all your friends to sign. Sharp bone near large soft arteries aren't a good mix. With the heavy long bones of the body, you also are talking about major force to break them, so there's also the possibility of other hidden trauma that can lead to things like blood clots and infection that can kill you right quick.

If you show up to a hospital with a broken bone anywhere near a major artery that can bleed you out in a minute or two, you're likely going to get a lot of attention right away from the ER staff (unless someone's actively dying) because they want to make sure they get you checked out and get everything stabilized so you don't suddenly start actively dying on them.

Lost both of my grandparents to complications from brain bleeds. Good luck with all that.

That and along with tears streaming out one eyes. No. How many people will lay down on a floor of a ER?

Medic here, people come in the ER by ambulance or personal vehicle and do this exact thing multiple times a day. Well, if via ambulance they don’t lay in the floor of course. Back pain is extremely common occurrence in emergency rooms.
