LINKWell, carrier based aircraft from US have been making sorties for some time now, as well as French non stealth fighters. F22, was not needed.
We also have air assets in Jordan. I'm almost willing to bet the 22's flew from there.

Indeed they were and without incident. But this little situation provided us an optimum battle test to see if the F22 could be detected by advanced Russian radar.

It is assumed Russia had its own .mil in Syria at the onset with their radar....I would prefer keeping the 22's capabilities a bit more quiet. Remember, this allowed them to get a good look at the effectiveness of their counters just as we got to play with our 22.

Maybe that's what I heard flying over my house yesterday.
I think I saw one on display at the Belle Chase airshow years ago.

I think it's crazy that we've had these $100 million jets for 8 years and are just now getting to play with them.
just trying to keep it fair

It is a bit of a catch 22 (Pun intended). If a Russian made radar was turned on and "painted" an F22, then we would know that they could see us. If painted, then we could try out our ELINT capabilities to see if we could jam it.
Also, if painted, that would be provocation to unleash hell on Assad (possibly our goal anyway). If we did that and Russia responded by sending up MiGs, we would want our most advanced fighter in the air.

ISIS thought they were seeing mirages in the sky... Unfortunately for them, they were right.
Yay Frenchies... they made a correct decision!

They had a lot of problems when we first got them apparently.

Take a look at the F35. That giant steaming piece of crap.

i'm calling bullshite on this..
i would bet that they have been using them for 10+ years and didn't want anyone to know..
and i have no problem with that. i don't need to know everything the military does or will do for the protection of this great nation.

Map, last I heard, ISIS didn't have an air force. Why we need a $160,000,000 jet when the old F15, 16 and 18 would be just fine.

i agree.. we actually could have used some Kaplan crop dusters for that matter..
my post was calling bullshite to the government leading us to believe they just started using these jets. it's just silly

I go to Langley AFB weekly for work and the F-22s there have a gold/bronze canopy. They are a sight to see though and when they take off they make a sound at a whole different level than the other jets at Langley.

Bet ISIS is scared shitless of their Super Cruise capabilities

Not dog fighting as there are no enemy aircraft to fight.

F22 not meant to dogfight anyway. It fights BVR.

The E-18 Growlers are more than adequate to suppress any SAM or other surface threats. You mention Russian MIgs - are any based in Syria? Not that any are aware of, right? The use of the Raptor was nothing more than a look at my toy or maybe even a rotation in forces. No valid A2A threats.

Assuming the IFF is working properly and the rules of engagement allow for it.
