If Finnish teachers are top notch and producing the best minds then hell yea, pay them!

Exactly. And education is valued. I'd like to compare to American blonde haired blue eyed kids. My girls both meet this same demographic and have 4.0's and high IQ's. Despite our educational system. What's the culprit? The education? Genetics? Social influences? I'm gonna say the last two are just as important as the first.

It's only getting worse too. There's no pride in teaching in America anymore. Why is a college grad going to take a 35k a year job when he/she can take a sales job or learn a trade making double that.
If there are so little amount of people being teachers, why do I see so many posts bitching about how little they get paid on facebook?

Because we already have a shortage of teachers. The morons that are teachers in this country right now don't deserve to be paid like that. If they went through the same teaching programs the Finnish teachers did, we would have less teachers and less educated children. Would not work.

Doctors in Norway aren't paid very well FWIW.

* Finnish slide. Seven years ago, U.S. educators and policy makers were all traveling to Finland, trying to understand the secrets behind its high achievement. Finland declined between 2006-2009 and again between 2009-2012, scoring 548 in math in 2006 and 519 in 2012. Finland is firmly out of the top 10 in math and science, although its reading scores are still high. The OECD’s Andres Schleicher says that demographic changes and immigration have not been high enough to explain the test score slide and it’s a bit of a mystery.

But teachers are, hence the best system.

Hmmm .... Is there a pattern here?

I can tell you that Finnish parents put alot of pressure on their children to work hard and do well in school. It's really no different than parents of successful children here in the US. I think it comes down to parental involvement.

My daughter hosted a student from Finland two years ago. She could talk four languages at 16. She was really smart and nice. Her family stayed with us for a week, really good people. My wife leaves in July to stay with them for 2 weeks

Teaching is still a respected and proud profession in Scandinavia. I have aunts and cousins who are teachers in Sweden and Denmark and they worked hard to earn their positions, and are paid very well.
The "Nordic Model" as a whole works very well (for the most part) in Scandinavia, but its implementation in the U.S. would be an absolute disaster.

It's not just the education system
It's the culture abd population. A lot of factors

And pretty much no poverty will do that for a homogenous country.
