If I were the detective, would I have shot the dog immediately? I'm sure I wouldn't have. But I also love dogs and would've tried to pet it or something, and if it was attacking me, I'd have hit it or kicked it first.

Friend of mine's alarm went off yesterday after the storage room door opened. BRPD responded. Officer was about to go around the side gate when the neighbor told him that there are dogs in the yard. His response?

"Thanks for letting me know, I would have had to shoot them if they came towards me."

Storage door is not behind the fence.

Don't blame me for what our protectors think. I didn't make these rules.

That video is rough to watch.

I had to go hug my dogs after watching that.

Did the detective overreact? Probably so, yeah. But that dog bolted out of there with the quickness

but why assume the dog is going to attack you? a lot of dogs bolt out the door if they see an opening.

He should have at least just stood there and waited to see if the dog was going to attack. If it does, then by all means shoot it. More than likely the dog was just going to give him a lick.

Phuck this POS cop

I don't disagree with you on that. I personally wouldn't have (most likely anyway) assumed the dog was attacking me. But I wasn't there either, and the video doesn't have sound.

I wouldn't be surprised if the detective faces disciplinary actions, and I'd be okay with that (and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't).

I can't even wrap my brain around this comment. Postal workers, UPS/FedEx/DHL drivers, Plumbers, Electricians, Public Works employees, walkers, joggers, etc, encounter dogs on a daily basis and neither get mauled to death or have to shoot a dog. It's fricking crazy really.

If this story would've been Joe the UPS guy, that pulled a glock and shot the dog while making a package delivery, I doubt anyone would be "trying to see it his way"

That's because Joe would be fired before the end of his shift.

I can feel the owner's heartbreak from just watching that video. The part where she is hugging her dog while it's dying and still wagging it's tail made me tear up.

How is this man given a gun and the responsibility to use said gun? It's obvious he cannot handle the pressure, and should find himself a nice job in a cubicle. Luckily it was only a dog this time, what would have happened if it was a young man thinking someone was about to rob him?

There is no sound, but I wonder if he even announced his presence as a police officer and all of that jazz.

In all seriousness, I think you and I both know the answer there...

I'm not the biggest police fan on the planet, but I can at least sympathize with that "having to make a split second decision". The problem is, not every human being is designed to make that decision correctly, and it's scary that the only way to wash out the ones that don't is for them to be put in a situation where they have to chose quickly.

The even scarier part is his weapon was facing a house with who knows what in it and he shot multiple times purely on instinct.

I can too, but I would never let me dog near the front door if a cop knocked on it.

He is a lab that loves people and will run up to anyone at the door. No way in hell would I let him just run out like that.

if I walk onto your property without permission and your dog attacks me do I have the right to shoot it?
