Stay busy. For the first month or so it's gonna be hard to sleep unless you use a sleep aid. Remember, when you quit something like alcohol, you almost always replace it with something else. In my case, I replaced it with worshiping God more and with Ebay. You have to stay busy so your mind doesn't wander about how bad you want a drink. You can do it. Also, don't be afraid to sip on a cold non alcoholic brew every now and then. Good luck. I've been sober for 27 months. I've lost weight and gotten a lot more active. I'm 61 years young and use to weigh 333 lbs. I now weigh between 280-290 pounds. I want to get to 260 pounds and I will. God bless.

Sleep is tricky and a common reason people go back to drinking. I had the same struggle. I had a Dr prescribe me trazedone and it helped. It will still be a struggle some nights but it does go away eventually
This is exactly what happened to me when I quit cold turkey.

Alcohol withdrawals can cause seizures, so if you are a heavy drinker I'd suggest a medical detox which can be done as an out patient. Good luck

Lots of concerned advice in here and I'm not a medical professional so sure be cautious. I went from daily beer drinking to weekends only, sleep just fine during the week without alcohol. Sparkling water helped me.

I can go all week without one then drink 8 or so on a weekend, sometimes just 1 or 2. It hurts a lot less and we always have some sort of kid activities going on.

Went for a walk after work.. a looong walk…
Weekends etc.. would have a lot of na drinks around …like ice.. some kind of waterish thing.. used that to replace feel of a drink in my hand when doing things like smoking meats.. hanging at pool.. etc

After a year was not as uncomfortable.. after7 years no real issue…

But I drank heavily and made bad choices .. I was not addicted completely.. just irresponsible. I stopped because my decisions had me on a path of dependency..

This is really not that much daily for an alcoholic. It's honestly breakfast for some minus the whiskey add vodka.

You simply have to put your mind to it. Anything else is a temporary fix.
If you can't do it the right way don't waste your time.

I recently went cold turkey after years of moderate to heavy every day drinking. Didn't have any physical side effects, but the cravings were real. Total Wine has a whole section of non alcoholic fake beers and liquors. I drink a fake beer or two here and there that definitely helps. Going to sleep was a chore for the first week, but once I fell asleep, the quality of sleep was much better.

How much are you drinking?

If just socially, it’s not that hard. Avoid your usual haunts and drinking buddies for a while and set a fitness goal. Drinking and getting in tip top shape don’t go together.

If your friends ask why you aren’t drinking, it’s easy tell them, “I have a race on XXXX date that I’m getting ready for.” They usually understand and congratulate you. After a while, they quit asking.

heavy drinker

I always wonder what people consider a heavy drinker? Daily drinker that does a glass of wine and or a couple beers, or are we talking about people dropping a daily 5th? Is this the people that drink before noon? The guy that drinks a couple pours of bourbon daily?

If addicted to the sauce, going to have withdrawals, a psych ward/behavioral health unit for a few days is a good idea.

I would consider a heavy drinker is at least 5/6 daily and more on the weekends. I was drinking at least this many every night for several years and it was causing serious consequences at work (being hungover everyday was just a part of life.)

Like nicotine you have to want to do it to slow/quit. But, as said before take your time and drinking may need more than just cold turkey quitting because withdrawls can be serious.

Fortunately, I was able to curb my weekly drinking to maybe one or two a week and has made my life much more enjoyable.

I rarely drink at all.. but if someone only has ‘a glass of wine’ daily.. or has ‘a couple beers’ daily.. as stated above.. then no, i doubt that fits anyone’s definition of a heavy drinker, to me that seems like textbook moderate drinker .

It is interesting how the perception of alcohol has changed in society. Nowadays it’s seen as bad and everyone is unhappy, overweight, and divorced. Back in the day when everyone drank everyone was happy, in good shape, and it must’ve helped keep marriages together because nobody got divorced

As others have said, the best advice I can give is to start working out.

Depending on how lean you are, you will start seeing results within the first two weeks. Working out and then taking the time to appreciate your results in the mirror each morning will create a positive feedback loop that will motivate you to continue.

The negative feedback loop of seeing how alcohol impedes your gains and drains your energy should make alcohol less appealing for you.

This won't work for everyone. But I recommend you try it. Pursuing a goal with tangible results may help to distract you from your previous cycles and will give you a reason to wake up every morning. Even more importantly, that positive feedback loop should give you something to look forward to, thus making alcohol feel a little less necessary for you.

Good luck. You can do this.
