re: Fortune: America is becoming the ‘uncool’ country that people want to move away from

This seems like it would be a temporary opportunity for most jobs, especially if there are significant differences in time zones.
Not really, you’d be surprised.. I actually took a pay cut to work overseas, since i thought id have a better overall quality of life and lower cost of living.. both have turned out to be true, for me …. But there are tons of jobs where you can make USA ‘first world’ dollars while living in ‘3rd world’ or developing nations .. think finance, government, even teaching - yes many teachers at international schools make what would be considered a first-world salary .. on the finance side, i know guys who live in Asia and they work US trading hours, so they are basically up most of the night.. but if you ask most of those guys, and if you asked me- id MUCH rather work graveyard hours and get to live in Ho Chi Minh or Bangkok or Bali than work normal hours and have to live in America .
Also fwiw i think the US has become more 3rd world than most of the 3rd world countries we’ve traditionally thought of.. but i digest .

Also, Is the idea that they are retaining US level salaries while moving to other countries?
Yes, that’s the ideal scenario .. there’s actually a term for it- ‘geographic arbitrage’.. but it’s much easier said than done .

I am assuming that they forfeit whatever is paid into their social security?
Why would you assume something so ludicrous ? I live overseas for what i consider a better life for me.. but ive been paying into SS since my first fast food job in the USA at 14 yrs old in the year 1993.. and then for decades afterwards .. Why would i, or anyone else, forfeit what theyve paid in, just because the USA has gone down the shitter ?

My job takes me to a different country every 2 or 3 months.. mostly in South America and in Asia.. my goal is to experience enough different places so that when im able to retire in about 15 yrs (much sooner than id be able to back home in USA)- ill have found, if not the perfect place- at least the perfect spot for me .

When I pass my kids will get a windfall from my unused inheritance from my dad and what my savings are. A lot of young adults are and will be inheriting huge sums of money. It explains why I often pass multi million dollar homes and see newborn baby bows hung on their mailbox. I doubt those are people my age having newborns.
Not sure where you live, but i think what you should have said are that those things are true “in my circles”.. obviously most dont care about the poors , but i think what you’re seeing isn’t representative of most Americans .
As far as all the “multi-million dollar homes and baby bows” youre passing all the time- the vast majority of them are broke, in debt, and showing off on social media the same shite you’re seeing from your F250.. they are try-hards, trying to ‘keep up with the (fill in the last name)’ and trying to impress people they don’t even like .
That’s an unfortunate headline .
I dont think it’s ‘cool’ vs ‘uncool’ as much as it is sanity vs insanity .. having lived overseas now for the last few years, from the outside looking in, America looks like a dysfunctional shitshow in almost every conceivable way .. and if you dare to speak up and say anything about it, you are accused of being unpatriotic or, god forbid, that you have “omg TDS !!11!!11!!”…. There’s just no sanity there at all .

I retired about a year ago and tell everyone that I recommend retiring as soon as you are financially able. You can think of a thousand reasons not to retire…but believe me, it will work out. Retire while you are still in good health.
Agree .
It cracks me up when people say (including some in this thread)- that because they retired and had a hard time ‘staying busy’ or ‘finding purpose’- they then extrapolate that to mean that ALL people must have the same issues in retirement .. No, not all of us attach our identity to our careers.. many of us have hobbies and relationships outside of our jobs.. i just wish people would realize that it’s not a one-size-fits -all, or even most .

Just doing the bare minimum - despite how you rationalize it to yourself- is in no way an ‘old school work ethic .’

I have memories like that too... My mom driving down the road, Convertable, telephone poles flying by and CCR and Janis Joplin on the radio in Lower Mississippi. I still can remember the little kids car seat with the steering wheel.
Yeah it’s wild when you think back on things, even things that youve never seen pics of in a photo album or been told stories about.. then you do the math on when that occurred and you realize Holy shite i must have been 2 1/2 years old, or 3 or 4…. But i remember it like it was 6 months ago .
Besides Captain and Tenille, i have vivid memories of listening to my parents’ 8 track (no joke) of Frampton Comes Alive on an endless loop.. and also Rhinestone Cowboy on the radio every half hour .. and on the ‘softer’ side - You Light Up My Life and Dont It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.. they played the absolute hell out of those songs .

Sedaka wrote it
Yes, that’s literally what i said in my post

I *think* his career rebirth started when The Captain & Tenille rerecorded his song 'Love Will Keep Us Together'. That was followed shortly by the duet with Elton John on 'Bad Blood'. All of this was many moons ago. RIP Neil.
MANY many moons ago.. i am Gen X but i have distinct memories from when i was 2.5 and 3 years old.. i can remember riding with mom to the post office in the green Oldsmobile with vinyl seats …. And that song by Captain & Tenille was playing ALL the time on AM radio.. i even remember Tenille at the end of the song singing ‘Sedaka is back’ as an ode to Neil who had written the song as part of his comeback .. What a time to be alive

Like i said, i didnt know who he was then, except that some people asked him for autographs.. and i barely know who he is know, at least before the events that transpired last week.. So i have no clue how big of a pussy the guy is, or isnt- i was just replying to whoever said he doesnt have family from Louisiana .

I’m sure he has family ties to Louisiana generations ago but neither parent is from the state let alone Cajun country. I don’t think it’s accurate for him to say he’s half Cajun.
Might want to check with Shia himself .. i met him circa 20 years ago at a screening for this Russell Crowe movie called Cinderella Man…. I honestly didnt know at that time really who he was, but we talked for a few minutes about NOLA and he told me his family’s from there originally .. not sure if any of them still live in the area though .

I'm close. The government says that I reach "full retirement age" in May. Who am I to argue with the government?
I realize youre probably just being sarcastic.. but unfortunately many people actually think this way .
I dont have all the answers.. im not retired yet, and im learning along the journey as i go.. but if yall take nothing else from this thread, please realize that RETIREMENT IS NOT AN AGE.. RETIREMENT IS A FINANCIAL NUMBER ….. and that number is different for everyone … dont let anyone tell you that ‘65 is the retirement age’ or ‘full retirement is 70’ or any of that hogwash.. yes, those are the rough ages at which you can collect SS.. but yall dont need me to tell you that if youre dependent upon SS for retirement, youre doing it all wrong.
Bottom line- if you hit *your* number at 35, then you cna retire at 35.. or 48 .. or whichever age YOU choose .. for me, ill be retiring in South America or in Asia, so my number will be lower than if i was retiring in the US.. but you gotta decide that for yourself .

Lack of opportunities isnt what holds most Americans back it it their rampant over consumption and poor life choices.
This is a (typical) oversimplification.. it ignores the fact that many of us may have been cleaned out in a divorce (or two) or that many of us may have started a business (or two) that ultimately didn’t succeed .. ‘poor life choices’, i know.. god forbid that any of us take a chance on love or business success .. but you do you, pal .

Gen X, 55 and retired last month. Worked in the U.S. my whole career.
You are an outlier .
That’s not a bad thing, it’s actually a really good thing for you.. congrats, seriously .. but youre an outlier, not so much on this board, where everyone is just below Musk in terms of net worth and everyone is married to an OT 12.. but in terms of raw numbers in the US amongst Gen X, Millenials and younger- most will never retire .

That sucks, im sorry .
I am Gen X and i dont think many my age and younger will be able to experience retirement in our lifetimes.. i had to leave America for overseas just to have any hope of retirement.. im still working but if id stayed in the US id probably be looking at working til 85 years old .. Good luck out there yall

If so, then i would submit that with some of these people , their logic isnt always logic-ing .
