so ford put into production what some tesla owners did which was to put a generator in their trunk with a can of gasoline to charge the batteries on long trips.

They're basically developing their version of the Ramcharger. And I highly doubt anyone actually got a portal generator to work to charge a Tesla outside of doing it for social media likes. Portable gensets have terrible frequency stability and the BMS in a Tesla is pretty sensitive.

So they are basically following Toyota's lead, about two years $20B too late.

Expensive lesson.

Toyota took a bunch of heat for ditching EVs and focusing on gas/elec hybrids. But the CEO at the time said out loud that EVs were nonviable in too many markets and settings (paraphrasing).

They're not as much ditching as refocusing on smaller more affordable EVs. For whatever reason they thought people wanted full size trucks and SUV EVs. Which was retarded.

FYI the 19.5B consists of:
8.5B for future models that they will never make now (mostly R&D)
6B to buy out of a JV for battery cells with SK
5B in other expenses (marketing, legal, retools, etc.)

There's a Ram concept truck that has a small v6 that only charges the batteries. A form of hybrid. Not sure it'll make production.

People joke that guns are part of American DNA.

Well, the internal combustion engine is right there next in line. Someone could invent the perfect electric vehicle tomorrow and most of us will stick with our gas powered vehicles.

That’s just how it is. The green types just need to accept it.

Could be a serious issue for dozens of people.

Yep, big job losses here in Kentucky, AFTER we gave Ford millions in tax credits.

I remember when the Ford F150 Lightening was the darling of this board. All the Global Warming Suckers were hyping it strongly.

It's a MUCH more serious problem than service - so many of them have caught on fire that many major insurance companies will not cover them and owners are warned to not park them inside a garage - no insurance, no registration - completely worthless - Ford is offering pennies on the dollar to buy them all back at a cost of several billion $$$.

I remember a few here cheering for Ford and believing every piece of their marketing hype.

I did find one thread from 2022 but there were many more multi-page threads.

Trucks have to be able to tow.

That simple.

The Ramcharger that Bill mentioned earlier (technically the REV), and it is 100% going in to production.

Agreed. It was always such a limited use case. Little EVs can be ok for people living in urban settings with good weather. Basically, Cali. Lol.

But most people who buy half-ton pickups live in either rural America, or in the burbs, but spend much of their free time getting the hell away from the charging grid. Often towing heavy stuff. And we live in places with grid disruptions like hurricanes. And in all of those use cases, half-ton EVs suck.

It's as if Ford leadership has no sense of its core customers and what they actually do with trucks. Shocker.

But that's an old problem. They have turned out soooo many shitty trucks in the last 20 years. Remember the 6.0 liter diesel F-250s?

Ford lost its way chasing all that eco garbage. Fine for compacts, stupid idea for trucks.

What I can't stand is the coercion on this issue. I don't care if greenies think they're saving the planet by driving lithium-ion propelled EVs (they're not, but that's beside the point.) They can go for it. I don't care. But they insist on doing everything in their power to kill the method of propulsion that built and continues to build this country.

It's a damned shame, but as best I can tell, the best truck engines ever built in this country were probably in the mid 90s. Those GMC Vortec V8s were plentiful, relatively cheap, and pretty reliable. Same with the Fords. That 7.2 L Ford Diesel may be the best mass produced diesel engine ever made. I still see those things clunking around. I owned a few of them, and basically the truck just fell apart around the engine.

But ever since then, they quit pushing for improvement on the metrics that affect performance and focused on all the emissions BS. And many of the "innovations" adversely affected performance.

So F Ford. They earned this.

To be fair that was on NAVSTAR. They made that thing a piece of shite by getting cheap on cleaning out the block. I had one unfortunately. The only nice thing was once you fixed the cooling issues, they were pretty stout and made big power.

Who got in bed with NAVSTAR? From the consumer's perspective, the engine is the truck. They know that, so I hang the NAVSTAR debacle on Ford. (And I had one of those damned trucks, too. It was a beast...when it was running.)

That’s fair. And I also blame ford for not putting a coolant filter on it like every other non-ford. 6.0 had. That would have fixed everything.
