sounds like you just need to rough him up a little bit so he gets tougher.

I gest you begin with the basics.

check his grip, and make sure his knuckles line up properly, and as the previous poster stated; have him hold the bat as if he had a little bird in his hands. Don't have him squeeze it.

Once he swings and his wrists cock, his grip will naturally tighten right before impact.

I'm betting his grip is all wrong.

That's one tough lil dude. If he wasn't I would have never believed him that it stings. I'm not one of those guys that shelter the boys, we get rough

Well yeah, he said he's 8.

OP, teach him to get the bat out of the palm of his hands. Get it up in his finger tips. Also, 2 methods that are used whether you're 8 or in MLB is tee work and soft toss. Nothing is better for working on a swing because they give immediate feedback.

Line up knuckles for better wrist rollover on swing.

What kind of bat is he swinging? Typically a two piece bat will have less vibration and therefore less sting than a one piece.

For his grip on the bat, having it be too firm is going to make it worse. You want him to hold it in his fingers and not his hands. Have him grip the bat loosely in his "door knocking knuckles" rather than the knuckles you would punch somebody with.

bone density?

nerve issues?

maybe its something medically interesting.

take a year off. let it heal.
some people are really really different from the norm.
maybe he should not be playing baseball at all.

if he is not hitting the ball down by his hands, nothing like what you are reporting should be happening ever if he is hitting the ball up by the label (reversed side).

I will read the whole thread. maybe you explain where he makes contact.
if its down by his hands, end of discussion.

I'm going to keep a close eye on where he's hitting the ball with the barrel. I had no idea the bat would vibrate so violently when you don't hit the sweet spot.

ah, you got it.

He doesn't have a bat of his own that meets the age requirements. He borrows from teammates (those things are expensive!)

His coach said he seems to naturally line his knuckles up correctly, and he keeps his hands inside. He just doesn't seem to extend and push through the ball.

Some people don't like it, but I used to put the but of the bat on my belt buckle and put the barrel against a fence. In that small of a gap, I could take that bat and have a full power swing. You've just got to keep your hands inside. I'm sure there are YouTube videos.

Big fan of that drill only we extend out a couple inches from belt buckle. Teaches a kid to be compact and quick and helps maximize the barrel through the zone.

Regardless of his age. Make him hit off a tee to see the difference in sweet spot and end of bat/handle. It's more probable he's stepping in the bucket and hitting everything off the end of the bat. Needs to learn to not be afraid to accelerate the bat, and figure out where he should stand at the plate . Good luck

Well, the bat he's using is much more forgiving than wood. Get him on a tee consistently and pay attention to his stance and then watch his feet. Teach him to sit on his back leg slightly and just pick up and put down the front foot when he swings shifting his weight forward. He doesn't need to have a huge step at this age.

Go check out bats here. I ordered bats for my school team here last season. Definitely have some good deals.

Also to help him keep that elbow tucked, do what's called the towel drill. I'm sure some people have heard of it before. Get a hand towel and have him tuck it under the back elbow. He has to work to keep that elbow tucked through the zone until he extends his hands after hitting the ball.

This has been proven to not make a bit of difference.

With him only being 8 yrs old, he may not have the interest to take playing any further than the next few yrs. But if he does, I'd have him switch hitting in a heartbeat once he has these basics down pat. Very few pitchers in that age bracket going onward face lefties, giving him a big advantage as a hitter & that also puts him a step closer to first base on a batted ball.
