Has anyone heard from Circus, Dhilip or Kalunda? How did those guys make it out?

I feel helpless
#1. Most important - they are safe.
#2. When the water goes down you will be able to work your arse off helping gut and rebuild.
#2 will mean more than you can imagine to them. .... I know.

Have those Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of Africa ever gotten tropical storm force weather?

They should be...but they arent. For some reason the levees did not tie in to high ground and the natural ground elevation at the end of the levees is below that of the spillways.
This is true for both Addicks and Barker. No clue why it was designed this way.
So much for "got to be"...
I'm going to have to read up on these to better understand how they were designed. Interesting.

I have some family in Kingwood that needs to get out. Is there any way to get them out by boat and brought to a place where I can come pick them up?

Saw the strangest thing coming through my town on the state line when I was making a generatot gas run. 3 huge black suburbans all emblazoned with signs that read Waffle House Response Team. I was like holy shite as they turned into state hwy 12 headed toward Texas.

I'm not that familiar with the Houston area. I'm from New Orleans.
You might check MWP's thread on the Outdoor Board. He's from Kingwood and got out last night by boat. They had 4' in the house when they left. He might be able to give you a better idea of what's flooded and what roads are passable. Good luck to you and your family.

DeRidder / Leesville area is similar to the Lake Charles area. They've gotten a lot of rain, but go west just a few miles into Texas and places like Jasper have gotten a lot more rain. It's amazing that the rain totals begin to drop drastically at the TX/LA state line from Toledo Bend to the Gulf.

So I was texting with someone in Covington who talked about "torrential rain for hours." I checked some weather observations and they had about 3/4 inch since midnight. This person went through Katrina and the March flood and now every weather event seems like a potential catastrophe. I guess a lot of people have a form of PTSD over that.

Current thinking is it will not be passable by Friday but that is just opinions from government officials. Have two different groups of friends who have made it from Houston to Beaumont via Hwy 90 but they have lifted 4x4 vehicles. Also heard you could go 90 to Liberty, then 146 north to 105 east to Beaumont. You must go north to get to LA. May not be able to go north in Beaumont. I-10 is closed in LA near Exit 4.

I'm not sure that's accurate. The top of the spillway is 108' for Addicks. Water doesn't get out unless it is released at the dam until it gets higher than 108'. The natural ground at the end of Addicks is 112'. LINK
