Have they closed the spillway gates?

There are no spillway gates on either Barker or Addicks The only gates that can be varied (one each dam) where Buffalo Bayou comes through Barker and where the small creek (I never knew the name of) comes through Addicks just to the west of Eldridge

Take a look at google maps. Just beautiful green grass at either end of both dams. No structures of cement or rock.... and definitely nothing like a concrete spillway, much less one with gates.

And that grass is growing in normal clay soils.

I lived there, just below Barker, and the black clay soil I gardened in was brick dry in dry times, and I had to soak it one day for it to be dig-able two days later. That band of black clay is fairly wide and strikes north south. I know that it can get really soupy and when I'd step on it, I could sink into it.

So I was texting with someone in Covington who talked about "torrential rain for hours." I checked some weather observations and they had about 3/4 inch since midnight.

I guess it depends on where the gage is. It was pouring for a couple of hours yesterday morning in Old Landing. We got quite a bit of rain last night and through mid-morning today. If I had to guess, since yesterday morning, I'd think we got at least 2-1/2 or 3" of rain. I'm certain we got more than 3/4".

The Waffle House at I10 and Walden Road in Beaumont was open this morning. I just assumed they were flooded in from the night before. You couldn't get to that location with a high-water vehicle.

My Sister is in Sienna Plantation, about mid-way back, Bees Creek....any updates?

It failed last year during August flood and the corps are too lazy to fix it, so every time it rains more than 6in it floods out the ne outskirts of Gueydan.
If a private person went and fixed it the gov would have a fit because it's a wetlands

Brazos River in Richmond has been revised down again, this time to 56'. It's at 53.63 right now, and won't crest until tomorrow afternoon.

Yeah the levee in Gueydan from what I could read was just never fixed but being "monitored".

It's starting to look like Port Arthur and Beaumont are going to be scenes of unbelievable devastation. Unfortunately the death toll is going to rise looking at some of these pictures and videos. Just unreal and so sad.
