Fire him, but be armed when you do and have a security camera rolling.
ETA:
Also, maybe change the locks and security codes and warn other employees not to talk to him after.
This has dateline episode written all over it.

This guy walked in off the street one day and had a story just like the rest, except his made little sense. He claims to be a doctor that's in med school to gain qualification to teach medicine and that the school is requiring him to get a public facing job to improve his soft skills. I made the mistake of ignoring this obvious red flag and decided to give him a chance. As time passes his story and commitment to the bit has deepened to a point of extreme concern. He's texted tirades about losing children in the OR, about being late due to waiting for patients to wake up and more. He also claims to be a Marine and an NOPD vet. Based on amateur sleuth research I'm 99% certain he's not a doctor and I also question the veracity of anything else he's told me.

quote:this. This is a guy that’s fired folks before.
Your services are no longer needed sir. Thank you for your contributions and I wish you the best in future endeavors".
When I was new as an owner I tried to make it easy, to save them, always worried about repercussions….every time my efforts bit me square in the arse. You will feel bad or worry for a day or two if you fire him. You will worry everyday of his employment if you don’t…then you will fire him anyway eventually.

You could also get a comprehensive background check done on him and show him proof he's lying about his experience. That's an easy defense if he sues you.

Have an honest discussion with him and let him know you aren't sure if it's working out, but you want to work with him to get better at it. You're basically giving him a heads up that it may be time to go, but also an outlet to actually attempt to right the ship and giving him some control too.
You think OP is fvcking this guy? You do this, and you are asking for him to get hurt at work.
Call him before his shift and tell him you don't need him any more.

I’m not sure why you’re putting my business out there. I told you I would be in today by 9.

No disrespect, but this is why I wish I had the balls to start my own business. You saw the GLARING red flag and went forward anyway?

Shocking you can run a successful business and be this dumb. Truly

Yep, you gotta move on from him, Maybe have a lead for him to work towards for another job.
But get him away from your business and your employees.
Give him 2 weeks pay package, it would be a cheap alternative to what damage might cross his mind.

Why in god's name would you hire him to begin with after hearing this?
This is clearly a lie. That makes zero sense.
Outsource your hiring. You can't do it all, and it seems like this might not be your strength.

quote:id not do this. As a small business owner I doubt there is clear policy and procedure in place. If you do have them you better make sure you were compliant in all matters if you put them in play.
I agree with firing him, but protect yourself. Documentation of violations of your policy and clear communication of the exact reason you are firing him.
The more you try to explain the crazy to the crazy person the worse it will get. He is perfectly comfortable living in his made up world with no boundaries or reason. He will debate you in the same manner. Waste of time and only makes the situation worse.

he is a lying crazy person. This is a waste of time and effort. This employment is going to end. Do not prolong it. The other employees will fill the slack as a thank you.

When dealing with a normal person I'd agree with both of you. But OP said he is worried that this dude will turn violent. So handling it by being hard and cold may not be the smartest thing, and calling him and telling him not to bother coming in anymore may provoke him.
There was obviously something he saw in this dude to hire him in the first place. So giving him a chance to work on it seems reasonable and may detract from this dude's potential violence. Obviously the easiest thing initially is to just fire him, OP even said that exact same thing in his post. But that's not the advice he was looking for. That's why I said what I said.

There is zero way I keep a lying, deranged, potentially violent person in my business.
He beats the shite out of Timmy in the break room, and your defense is I gave him a second chance because I thought he may get real mad and didn’t want to upset him?

The school called this morning. Said your grades are suffering because you working too much so we gonna have to let you go.

To answer some of the obvious questions:
1. Why did you look past this and give him a chance? The story sounded strange, obviously, but the work isn't hard and we needed to fill the role. I figured what's the harm in giving a shot, and I'll cut bait quick. It was absolutely dumb, no doubt. This was only a few weeks ago and the story has continued to grow in ridiculousness and I'm now into the cut bait phase.
2. How can you be this dumb and run a business? I ask myself that question everyday. We'll see how long it goes! Just made 5 years. Honestly these situations make it less and less worth it.

quote:none of this. You think he is a good enough employee for someone else? Reward him for lying? No. Terminate employment within five minutes, period. Anything else leads to conversations that aren’t worth having.

Really? Fire the Mfer!! He clearly lied on his application thats grounds for termination. End of story, who gives AF about his feelings or his mental well being. Your a good guy, that doesnt mix well in business when it comes time to be the BOSS!!

If you fire him and you think he is unstable then have a Sherriff deputy present. I know landlords that call them when they have to evict a problem tenant. Keeps everyone level headed usually.

Tell him the med school called, and said he's good to go. Doesnt have to work there anymore and now can focus on his medical career.
Make it a big deal and have a surprise congratulations/going away party for him.
