11’ Highlander Limited here... 165,000 miles on it. Some minor issues; but, other than that it’s been oil changes and tires. Still runs strong and gets 21 mpg in the City.

My wife has a 2016 Pilot and we like it. It has a really nice ride. We shopped the Highlander and it was a close decision. If the car had come with navigation, I would like it better.

Damn this is a legit tough SUV choice.
And neither are SUVs!
On a serious note I feel like the OP scant go wrong with either. Strong customer following based on logevity and reliability. Really depends on which one the OP likes better aesthetically.
ETA And I can't spell. Leaving the error DWI.

While the OP seems to have made up his mind I happened onto this Car & Driver comparison (sans Highlander) but it is interesting the Pilot came in 5th of 5. While car rags don't spend much time worrying about reliability Honda like BMW has long been the darling of the magazines so coming in at the bottom is certainly telling. Brake and tranny (which I mentioned before) are major issues in the review.

Parents have a Highlander, aunt has a Pilot.
Highlander looks better from the outside, but Pilot seems much larger on the inside and more well appointed.
My wife drives a 2016 CX-9 and we both prefer it big time over either. But maybe that's because we're paying for it.

What are the trim levels of each, very important when comparing how well they are appointed.

We were leaning Pilot but decided to wait until next Spring/Summer to see Subaru's new model, the Ascent. The production model will be unveiled at an auto show either this month or next, sales begun in Spring.

Friend of mine was looking at these smaller SUV's recently and the answer here is the Honda Pilot, hands down.
I was expecting to like the Toyota better, but after looking at both the Pilot just seemed higher quality. The Pilot also had more room and more features for the money.
Go look at them yourself and compare, but to me I came away much more impressed with the Pilot.
