This is Pat Connicks pet project for Jefferson Parish. This place has been vacant probably since the 90's and Jefferson Parish just recently bought the entire property from the archdoicese for $3.8M and were in the middle of a multi million dollar renovation.

A few relevant points:

1. Parish is only buying the portion on the WEST side of Barataria Blvd. The Parish currently has a 99-year lease for $1 a year, but with the church's bankruptcy it is hard to do solid improvements to what is technically an "asset" of the church, so they worked out a deal to buy it outright.
2. This fire is at a building on the EAST side of Barataria Blvd., not what the Parish is buying. The east side is now commonly called Madonna Manor, the west side Hope Haven.
3. I completed the Master Plan for Hope Haven (west side) back in 2022, and my firm and I completed conceptual design and cost estimates for one component in the master plan (a sloping concert meadow with new stage) in 2023.
4. I spoke with the councilperson involved at the Parish's Bicentennial Ball; closing is scheduled for either this week or next week.
5.Senator Connick is very instrumental in getting state capital outlay funds for this project, which WILL be an asset to the Parish and a great facility when it is all completed.

He grew up right there on Warwick. It's a home neighborhood thing for him, too.

Question, is the burning building on the side with the chapel or on the Archbishop Shaw side?

The white house that is now for sale next door to the house where Pat Connick grew up belonged to his aunt and uncle, who were also my aunt and uncle. The uncle was his mother's brother and the aunt was my mother's sister.

I can remember as a small child when there was a dairy behind both houses.

I do hope that Pat can make redevelopment happen. My win the lottery type contribution would be to take a couple of the buildings and convert them for an assisted living facility for disabled veterans.

Had a conversation with my county (Madison, MS) Veterans Service Officer yesterday and we discussed care options for elderly veterans. We agreed that a hole in the system was the lack of assisted living options vice full blown nursing home care (which Louisiana and Mississippi are doing a pretty good job with).

The burning building is next to the chapel on the east side of Barataria Blvd, about 150 feet south.

Damn shame, as it was a very beautiful building with a spiral staircase leading up to a turret on the north side. Has been boarded up for years but subject to break-ins and homeless intruders. Don't think the cause could be electrical since the power would likely be disconnected.

I had some interest in trying to acquire the building and stopped there a few months ago. There were homeless in the utility building just south of this one. Interesting trivia: on the south side wall someone has spray-painted "Last night a DJ saved my life". I wondered whether anyone other than me knows that reference?

Butch, my mom went all through school with them, from Immaculate Conception to Holy Name of Mary. Good, good friends.

It was on the Madonna Manor side, the building closest to Wichers and Chinchuba.
