Cost + 10%: You pick a $500 standard tub. Builder makes $50. You pick a high end $5000. Builder makes $500.

All the GC did in both cases was call a plumber. What did he do to earn an extra $450?

bullshite. Expensive items, more often than not require much more coordination and attention to detail.

Using your little scenario, do you really think the GC's work would be equal overseeing the installation of a fiberglass tub/shower unit and say, a clawfoot stand alone tub with a floor mounted tub filler?

The answer is no.

3 houses in the Garden District after the storm.

Put at least one claw foot in each of them.

Never had to have a GC hired to oversee anything.

My licensed plumber worked just fine.

The same kind of coordination and oversight required when installing a high end quartzite vs uba tuba?

No you don't. And I doubt your ludicrous claims that you were able to hire a plumber capable of installing a claw foot tub all by himself.

Ok buddy. I understand. You are a GC and you believe it's best to hire you because you took a test and have some insurance.

Maybe you need to look for some people that you can use in NOLA.

Instead of posting on TDs, maybe you should be shaking hands at Home Depot and networking.

a-hole.

Works both ways. Why should I have to pay more when the change order was made from a 2k chandelier to a 17k chandelier? Same amount of work was required for the install.

Haha I was just being sarcastic, I am currently self building a house (not a GC btw). I was knocking the cost plus model earlier in the thread.

The cost plus or time and materials is about the biggest rip off I've ever seen.

I can see it for more complicated builds that the contractor may get burned for; especially with things that aren't known at the time.

Other than that; you will get fricked in the long run.

Yes. Uba Tuba is a commodity and extremely consistent pattern. The more exotic slabs are unique are require hand picking which often delays the process. The client is also bound to change their mind multiple times on a dramatic pattern versus a plain uba tuba.
