What area do you live in and how long is your commute?

The hard part will be picking, because there’s several excellent choices in JV area. I’d search around Jones road and 290 in the area of a church called The Foundry.

Demographics on Jones gets iffy near 1960, but gets better the closer you get to Grant road ( about 5 miles north of 290 on Jones)

Use Cypresswood for your search. That covers the area I'm talking about. It's probably the best for your money in that part of town and you have plenty of amenities nearby. Vintage Park is pretty cool.

Is Houston traffic really THAT bad? Is there a side of the city I could live on where I’d be traveling the opposite direction of the majority of traffic to get to work? If that’s the case I’d be willing to venture further out.

It's bad, but manageable, especially since you're not traveling downtown or the Galleria area. Like I said above, I lived in the Spring/Klein area and my office was in the Galleria area. It was 19 miles and would take me about 45-50 mins at 6:30a. You'll be fine if you live on the north/northwest side and only going to Jersey Village.

290 Traffic is awful around that area.
Look into the Cypress area... most of the apartments in your price range will have a lot of families that live there to be in CyFair School District. You might want to find a higher end complex.

My gf wants to live on Westheimer where a 1 bedroom runs about $900. IMO that’s a little much.

Better hope you're strapped. Westheimer sucks.

I live along the 249 corridor. My commute to work is about 10 minutes.

Not to be rude, but have you ever been to a Metropolitan area? You want $800 a month for rent and not be far from your office? Get ready to slum it up baw.

Took me almost 2 hrs to get from BWY 8 to Spring Cypress last weekend. It's a mess.

She’s wrong, you’re right. But don’t tell her that!
Just plan to stay in the area a couple of days and look around. Tons of hotels

I’m from NOLA, I know what real hood is. I’ve lived in Houston as well and Houston’s hoods are like Disneyland compared to what I consider hood.

Jersey Village borders some sketchy areas but I wouldn't call it hood. Cypreswood is not hood by any stretch of the imagination.

He can find a nice place in Cypreswood for around $900 per month.

Any thoughts on Memorial City?

Probably expensive I’m assuming.

So he can find a place about 15% more than he wants to spend? Got it

If I have to spend $900 that’s fine but the commute would need to be easy.

My budget will eventually increase substantially but the first few months I won’t be making as much as I will once I start going offshore because of training.

Once I start going offshore I can move up to something in the $1200-$1400 range.
