The math and stuff is pretty easy online, but the cut-and-paste shite is a bitch.

Depending on where that is. I live in a rural area and our area has great internet, kids have iPads at school, and they are having packets picked up today for the kids to continue work.

Yes. Kids will drive their parents nuts, homework/school time at home is great to break it up. Reduce screen time, do work, get outside.

Think every level of school should move to pass/fail for the rest of the semester.
No one signed up for this
No one paid for this
We are in uncharted waters
For higher levels of schools, you are potentially taking away job opportunities and career paths from people. "Sorry you aren't getting hired, your grades slipped due to the coronavirus"
The only unilateral element of school has now been eliminated.

I work in a K12 at central office, obviously nothing is confirmed yet but I don't see kids coming back to school this year now that testing is likely waived.

I have a 1st grader.

Her teacher sends daily worksheets for phonics.

She has Zearn for Math.

And we still have daily reading assignments and log.

Not sure how any of this will be graded or if it’s just a trust thing for the parents to do.

I have a fourth grader and fifth grader. They have:
* Daily video conference with the teacher and other students via Zoom
* Daily video pre-recorded lessons
* Online reading and writing assignments
* Online math assignments
* Online science assignments
Plus class Dojo, See-Saw and another tool I forget.
All of this is graded and feedback is given to them in about 2 days.
Granted, it took us about 4 weeks and a few other failed methods to get to this rhythm, but it is working ok now. We've been out of school since early February. It's possible, but takes a lot of support from the parents.

Seems to me it just boils down to parents giving a shite. Certainly a challenge 3 days in

I have a fourth grader at LSU Lab. They are doing assignments online via Google Classroom. It might have taken about an hour and a half to get through her four core class assignments yesterday.

Do you think most high schoolers and middle schoolers have that kind of discipline? Do you think most of their parents have enough discipline to stay on them to make sure the work gets done?

I hope you can be the spokesman to the 2 ISP's in my area who sell us 15mb download speeds and .5 upload for $70 a month.

We were discussing last night the Swiss cheese effect of future knowledge this generation will likely have.

For example, I had an absolute shite elementary school teacher who had a serious beef with my dad from years before, and she wasn't called on it by my mom til halfway through the school year. The first half of the year was when they covered subtracting large digit numbers.

To this day, I can generally handle most algebra, understand geometry, statistics, etc-- but ask me to subtract one 3 digit number from another, where you have to borrow and carry? I'm probably going to have to do the "add my answer to the bottom number" trick to be sure it's right.

Heaven help all the parents of 1st-2nd graders whose kids haven't learned to read yet.

That old teacher? That dumb bish was clearly absent when they discussed engines and mechanics. I remember she told us that trains stayed on tracks because there were magnets on the wheels pulling the cars along. Even 7 year old me was like, this woman's a dumbass.
