Completely idiotic and would lead to WAY higher taxes. Don’t believe me, go read quite literally any literature on the subject or, even easier, just look at every other 1st world nation on the planet

You think the government wouldn’t seize your assets for unpaid consumption taxes? Sweet summer child

Just don't bitch when the F150 comes with a 13k tax bill on top of the sales price.

the market is 95% first time homebuyers right now. In Baton Rouge if you have house less thank 300k in value it sales pretty quickly. Anything over 300k is going to sit on the market.

Very area dependent for sure….

So you’d rather pay production or excise taxes to the federal government?

Is it impossible to have a state based sales tax or income tax? If I buy something and pay a purchase tax on it like a car or groceries, I own them and those things are not repossessed in the future.

If I buy a piece of property outright, or pay off my loan, I shouldn’t owe anything else to the state for it. I own it, I’m not leasing it from the government. That’s why I hate property taxes.

If you prefer to have all your taxes go to your state capitol for redistribution, I could see where you'd be less in favor of local property taxes.

Why can’t you have local sales taxes?

Do you not use roads or fire departments or police departments or sewer systems or public parks?

You can, but they are less efficient.

Would you go a county over to buy your fridge if the sales tax was 10% vs your county that collects 12%?

If we actually moved to a consumption tax model people would be floored at their use tax obligation on shite like this and jurisdictions would have no choice but to enforce it due to it being their revenue generator. All these dudes fawning over consumption taxes would be getting hit for audits over buying their trucks and refrigerators… you want to talk about some threads wheee dudes would be melting

I already said I understand that taxes are required for a functioning community. I disagree with the nature of property taxes in that they fundamentally render every single citizen into a renter that rents their property from the government. Once purchased, the land should be owned by the buyer.

Sold a house months ago, people are buying. I know a chronic pissant like you would never understand these things though.

Are people already audited over not paying sufficient sales tax at places currently? Because consumption taxes are already in place.

Of course people use these, but their "fee" for using such services shouldn't be proportional to the cost or assessment value of their home.

It is, you’re just being assessed a tax on its value. Don’t pay your income taxes now and see if they won’t take shite that’s not related to your income

Me personally, if I’m not paying property taxes no I wouldn’t. I’m not speaking for anyone other than myself here.

No, I’ve never heard of an individual going through a sales and use tax audit ever.

Roads are largely funded via tolls, registrations, and gasoline taxes at the pump.

Sewers are paid for in usage fees.

Property taxes largely fund schools and emergency services, and we are in an era where people have apparently forgotten the importance of public education and the police in a country like this.

Downvote this all you want. But it doesn’t make it any less true.

I bought my first home in 2007 for $145,000. Three beds, 2 baths, 1/2 car garage. That same house today would be $250-275k.

3% interest over 18 years brings that value to about $246k today...

Property taxes are the worst form.

You know what I hate about property taxes? Well, it might not be as easy in some places since assessors offices has information available online, but I used to work for a department in local government and I often had to go to the assessors office to find out the owner of land that had a lot of trash and had to get them to clean it. There were people who owned a lot of land that was paying like $100 in property tax.

This was early 2000s and there were a lot of people building homes. They were paying $800-$900 a year on their 1 acre and people who had 200-250 acres of land were paying $100.

Now, between property tax and home insurance people are getting drained.
