If it rains there is a castle down the road that's our back up venue, b according to the wedding planner.

And this is why the institution of marriage has gone down the tubes and why divorce rates are so high. To a lot of women these days getting married as all about the wedding/ceremony and no thought given to actually living as a married couple. They just want the ceremony.
happens all the time in LA/the south. Attractive women find a good ole baw to marry around 20-24, have the big ceremony, have a couple kids, share all the pics on FB for attention, then realize around 35-40 that the annual trip to Destin and bi-monthly trips to Chili's aren't enough to keep her interested.

You can't really jump in here and dispute my post with your 5k comment about me not having creativity.
Getting everything for free isn't creative

Yeah, honey chipotle chicken crispers and trips to a beautiful beach and ocean must be terrible.

The fact of the matter is, if you go cheap on a ring and have the means to do otherwise, people are going to judge you. Whether that is right or wrong for them to do does not change the fact that it will happen.
Your fiancee-to-be could say, and mean (in the solitude of your home), that she doesn't give a rats arse if you propose with a ring pop. However, every time someone gets excited and says "Ohh show me the ring!!" she's going to cringe with embarrassment if she has to hold up the scrap parts from someone else's diamond that her cheap 100k+ making fiance bought her. And people will talk behind your back about it and make fun of it. Again, whether that's right or wrong I'm not here to argue, but that's what will happen. The ring isn't for you, it's for her. If it's within your means to make her extremely happy and proud with something she should be keeping forever, and you love her, maybe think about doing that. Even if it seems ridiculous to spend 2 months salary on a rock. Later in life she may think it's ridiculous for you to spend 6 months salary on a 451 cubic inch piece of rolling metal that was made in the 60's. But you'll do that anyway because it's something for you to show off and be proud of.
This rant only applies to people with the means to do so. If you're a teacher and your potential spouse is a part time waitress (not that there's anything wrong with that), obviously people will be understanding if the ring doesn't blind them.
And for the people who think the idea of trying to impress people with a rock is archaic and played out and stupid and made up by petty humans, penguins been doing that ish forever. And penguins are awesome.

I always love these threads. Everyone comes in explaining why spending $10k or whatever on a ring is such a waste of money and only an idiot would do it, but these are the same people that will basically call anyone who spends less than $75k on a car a "poor."

If she really loved you and wanted to spend the rest of her life with you she would give no fricks. You could give her a ring from a cereal box and she would be content. So why feed her materialistic desires to compete with other women. Where does it end? If you spend that much on a ring, she will want to milk your bank account dry for other things which women compete with each other like purses, clothes, vehicles, etc.
I'm sorry that some woman trampled you.

Don't spend a lot. Marriages don't last anyway.

We got good deals by using highly talented friends for all of the services. We were very creative on decorations to keep the price down and we skimped on flowers

Oh the horror! Dumb bitches and foolish men with nothing better to do will laugh about a piece of jewelry to fill the void in their souls. Here, take all the money I have and give me the biggest shiniest rock I can buy!
