Irma huge as a post tropical system. Big ole comma looking low.

Jose over the corner, tiny and catching tons of shear this evening.

We have been without power since 12 eastern I am in Perry Ga. besides the power out we had no damage but things got hairy there for 3 hours. 57 mph wind gust made the butthole pucker so I can't imagine anything higher than that so god speed to the residents of Florida

Wind damage here was minimal. Matthew was far worse.

The water - holy shite. Glad I'm not on a low lot. One of the gated waterfront neighborhoods here was inaccessible and homes had 2 feet of water in them.

Power restored. Peak wind gusts got to around 55 mph here.

I hope that my home never experiences the full force of a hurricane.

Still no power at my place on Johns Island, but I did find one bar that was open with beer, food, and da Saints game.

I was surprised the storm surge went that far inland. But yeah, with the River..makes it tough to tell and it makes it extremely tricky to know how far out north/south of the river overflowed and water went out

I wonder if the water Liz got came from the Everglades and/or the Lake Okeechobee drainage canals. Her street was flooding as the storm was approaching her. At that time, water was being blown out of the coastal bays by the strong winds out of the east. It wasn't storm surge at that time, at least not in the way it's traditionally thought of.

Over the last 15 or 20 years, the USACE has been undoing some of their Everglades flood control work from the 60s and 70s to try and return to a more natural water flow. At one time, the Everglades were almost completely channelized. Some of that work has been reversed. I don't know what the plumbing is exactly like now, but I wonder if water can be pushed into Bonita Springs from the east and southeast. If it's an issue, I'm sure she'll be hearing about it in the weeks and months to come.

Lake Okeechobee, another environmental disaster, drains to the Atlantic and the Gulf, via the Caloosahatchie River. People on both coasts bitch about algae blooms brought on by fertilizer rich Okeechobee runoff. I think there are levees along the channels/canals, but I'm not sure how high. The levees around Lake Okeechobee are an accident waiting to happen. One day, Pahokee (Home of Rickey Jackson!) is going to get washed off the map. Again.

Remember the buoy at the southernmost point in Key West? the one that laughed when the guy got flattened by an early wave?

Well, that buoy got the last laugh. Lost a little paint, and maybe some rubber, but it's now considering asking a blue shed to Key West for a drink.

THE buoy, today, scraped, but not broken

USPS in the affected states is closed until further notice- this was announced Friday.

Safety precautions during potentially deadly natural disasters are more important to most people than you getting your eBay order delivered on time.

I'm pretty sure that the Southernmost Point monument is a giant hunk of concrete mounted to the concrete apron it's on. I don't think it's ever going anywhere.

Buoy?

That's as much of a buoy as the Saints are a super bowl contender.
