I ride as if I was a car. The only thing I may do is if there are 3 or so cars at a red light, I may pull up on the right side of the cars on the shoulder to get through the intersection faster, but I stay off to the side and never pass a moving vehicle. Only way that guy had a right of way is if there was a bike lane. I try to stay as far to the right on non-busy roads as possible. I have cars pass me that don't even have to put a tire in the other lane and I feel perfectly comfortable. But every once in a while, there's a jackass that blows by me as close as possible. They've got two or three feet they can get over without even veering into the other lane. I'd say that if you rode a bike once in a while, you'd see that there are far more a-hole drivers to cyclist than the other way around. Cyclist can be annoying (I lived on river road and hated them), but I don't find they do as many shitty things as I've seen drivers do to myself and others.

I feel sorry for anyone in Baton Rouge that uses a bike every day for transportation, drivers really do hate cyclists.

I just ride for leisure and exercise, but where I live, I have to ride maybe a tenth of a mile down the wide shoulder on Burbank before I can cut into a neighborhood and I always hear a honk from some a-hole that's insulted someone's riding a bike 5 feet off the road.

A very popular trail is in my backyard. I go for walks/jogs on it with my wife. It is pretty much looks like a road (has broken yellow line to map out the lanes) but is smaller. The etiquette is for bikers to yell out "on your left" so that you know they are going to be passing you. Many dumbasses think that by saying that, that I should have to get over even further in my lane instead of him having to get into the other lane (like you would pass if you were in a car). If you can't pass in the other lane, then you hit the brakes and pass when it is clear you idiots!

I have had multiple times that they fly by me intentionally close to me. They feel that drivers need to respect them on the road but that pedestrians need to also give them the right of way. I like biking myself, but the "hardcore" guys are idiots that will end up hurting themselves and most likely others because of their entitlement attitude.

I was riding the Tammany Trace Trail on the north shore with some friends a few weeks back, and if you're not familiar with it, the trailhead hits 3 breweries, so it's more of a leisure/fun thing than a hardcore training ride.

Me and my cousin and a friend had just pulled onto the trail after resting and we were getting up to speed. Granted, we were 3 abreast and were taking up the whole trail, but it was for maybe 30 seconds. I got over and the guy on a road bike that passed me glared at me.

What's up with crossfitters? I've tried to avoid their lives as much as possible, but why are they as bad as cyclists?

I can assure you that I watch out for all drivers. I am not protected by a metal cage and potential death is all around me.

I have been hit once. I was making a left turn, which I signaled for, when a car pulled out to make their left and t-boned me. I had the right of way as they were at a stop sign and I wasn't. It threw me over the hood of their car. Funnily enough, it didn't damage my bike or myself other than road rash on my arms, but my left pedal went right through the driver's bumper and left a nice hole. He didn't want to call the cops, and I was a little shaken up and just wanted to get home, so we left it at that. I haven't gotten on my bike without a helmet since then.

There are a lot of a-hole cyclists in this world. There are also a lot of nice cyclists in this world that get a bad wrap because of the assholes. It kills me when I see cyclists run red lights or pass on the right when there isn't enough room (the 3-foot rule works both ways). There are way more a-hole drivers, though. The amount of potential accidents I've had to avoid because of careless drivers is astounding.

But whatever. This is a cyclists thread on the OT, so we are the scum of the earth.

All of this. I'm very mindful of my surroundings when I ride. I stay on the road, where I belong, and every crosswalk and intersection is a potential accident.

In short, I keep my head on a swivel. The driver of the Suburban texting on his/her cell phone doesn't know me and doesn't care about my health.

I hate to comment on cyclist because I fear someday I'll take one out and my hate for them will be used against me in court.

They ride these back roads out in the country 2 or 3 wide and I'm amazed more aren't killed. Come around a curve at 45mph with a loaded trailer and have bikes in the way and nowhere to go and things get hairy. Luckily the times this has happened there wasn't another vehicle coming and I was able to swerve around them

Cyclists aren't bad. Crossfitters aren't either, they're just foolish. Handling that much weight with that kind of terrible form in those violent movements is simply horrible for your ligaments.

They train on River Road here, south of Baton Rouge. These are guys that are in teams and race regularly. They honestly have no where else to train, and it's better that they ride out there than clog up city streets. The problem on River Road is people that drive 70-80 mph on a road with as many blind corners as that one. A guy I knew in high school was killed by a truck that hit a blind curve at 60.

For critical mass, cyclists get into groups to ignore traffic laws and annoy the shite out of everyone.

This is, of course, to raise awareness that cyclists ignore traffic laws and annoy the shite out of everyone on a daily basis.

I had an incident with a cyclist and her dog on Bourbon (past Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop and headed toward Esplinade)...

girl was riding along with her dog on a lead and I stayed behind them, she stops and lets the go of the dog, who then proceeds to go into the middle of the street...thankfully I was able to stop, but I yelled at the girl about being stupid as I drove by...

I don't think any cyclist in this thread is taking the cyclist's side in your situation. Passing on the right must be done lawfully.

I've seen a couple of accidents like this. Bike lanes around here merge into traffic before intersections, but that doesn't stop them from creeping by cars in the gutter/shoulder when there is a red light.

I'm afraid I'm going to hit one that tries to go around cars at the intersection. They should not be there, but so many of them do that to get around traffic. It's incredibly dangerous.

They're called "critical massholes" for a reason.

How about riding a motorcycle? Driving a convertible? Driving a SmartCar? Having to stop to change a tire on the interstate? Turning left on a busy highway?

Well said. What I care most about as a driver is that the cyclist is obeying the laws for their safety and for drivers' safety. I don't care if cyclists run stop signs when nobody is around. I bike a lot myself and sometimes its a pain to have to come to a complete stop. However, I'm not going to be an a-hole and blow through a stop sign when other cars are approaching. If I get a ticket, I'm ok with that.

I feel sorry for all the people in cities like BR that want to bike to work or to wherever. There's zero infrastructure for safe bike travel and drivers with little patience. It's a recipe for disaster and I wouldn't even bother trying to bike in an environment like that.

Bikes travel to the front of the intersection during a red light to avoid getting sideswiped when the light turns green. They are safe if they can get into the intersection before the first car tries to turn.

I got through the first page, and was much of the same bullshite that these discussions turn into.

FYI I drive a lot and bike a lot, so I've logged thousands of miles on both sides of this constant conflict.

As far as Rex goes, if you can't see him, you shouldn't be driving. I'm guessing you just weren't particularly vigilant at the time. None of us is above the almost violation you committed. Glad for his and your sake that there was no collision.

I generally like my fellow cyclists, but since I'm not retarded, I know that the smug cyclist stereotype isn't made up. With that in mind, I make sure that every single time a motorist makes literally any correct driving decision that results in my not dying, I give him a wave or a thumbs up or something. I find it nothing short of fair for me to acknowledge the fact that a human being successfully controlled a multi-ton automotive so that I may reach my destination unscathed. It is perhaps because of this general attitude I've chosen behind the handlebars that I don't recall a single instance of a motorist's rage being directed at me while biking. Perhaps I'm a better cyclist than most. Perhaps I, and not they, should be smug.

This leads me to a couple theories I have, the more obvious one being that practicing the golden rule while biking--that is, going a smidge out of your way to let the others around you know that you give a shite--ultimately results in more enjoyable experiences for all on the road and in the bike lane.

The other theory rests in that, whereas my courtesy on a bike sees itself generally repaid, I don't see that same result when I'm driving, and I surmise that it is because a motorist is shielded from the elements by his vehicle, whereas a cyclist is exposed to the elements and, therefore, other people. If a motorists wants to communicate to anyone else on the road, there's a couple types of honks and four or five things he can do with his lights. A cyclist can speak English and be understood.

I don't think cyclists are any better or worse than motorists, and the amounts of road rage I experience behind the wheel and handlebars are similar. I think that we see more of the cyclists' rage because they are, for all intents and purposes, naked. If you cut me off while I'm driving, I can say literally anything I want, and you'll never hear it. If you almost hit me like Rex did today while I'm on my bike, you can almost catch me rolling my eyes, and then you're gonna think all cyclists are assholes.

I certainly didn't

Understood, but both cyclists *and* drivers should not make assumptions - that kills people.

I'd add pedestrians to that category too. You can never be too careful.

If Rex was just turning into a parking space and there is no room for a car to pass on his right, I feel that the biker needs to proceed with more caution. When I'm on a bike, I never zip through tight spaces, especially if I'm passing a bunch of cars. All it takes is someone to decide that he/she wants to pull over or somebody to open their door in front of me and I'm toast.

not really, you just haven't come across the right person

I've only been yelled at once, and that was when I was riding to work on wide, neighborhood roads with a speed limit of 25 mph. The idiot comes flying by me going about 50, and his idiot g/f or whatever leans out the window and yells "get off the road a-hole!"

I was all the way to the right, doing nothing wrong, but these idiots felt the need to still yell at me.

rednecks gonna redneck I guess

From most hate to least hate:
1 cyclist / pedestrians
2 pedestrian / motorists
3 motorist / other motorists
4 cyclist / other cyclists
5 motorist / cyclists
6 motorist / pedestrians
7 cyclist / motorists
8 pedestrian / other pedestrians
9 pedestrian / cyclists

I'd like to see people rank these from most hate to least hate.
