It was tough just to get tax returns from my dad to show I had a financial need so I could get pell grants/loans
My dad was pissed off when I asked for his info for Pell Grant. He wasn’t paying for my school and thought how much he made shouldn’t matter. I never knew that he made that much and I got no Pell Grant.
In hindsight I should have emancipated myself at 18. He would have lost me as a dependent, but I wouldn’t have struggled and starved for 3.5 of my 5 years.
Stupidly I got married January 1 2005 as a third year sophomore. I couldn’t apply for Pell grant till spring of 2006. By then I had my grades up and had an academic scholarship to go with the Pell grant so my last 2 semesters were a lot easier.

I was told from a young age my parents didn't have the $$ to pay for my college and I better get the grades needed for scholarships. I did but took out a few loans just I avoid having to work so much. Left LSU with 16k in debt total in 2012 and paid it off within 3 years of graduation. I was pretty bitter at the kids who lived it up in college getting anything and everything paid for but I feel like having to manage my own money, education, expenses helped me tremendously entering the real world. I don't want my kids to struggle but I want them to get that knowledge/experience.
Ive got 3 kids and there's no way I could just pay for everything. They'll get the same talk I did about it being on them to pay for where they want to go and they need to make reasonable decisions. Go in state, get TOPS, etc. Hopefully they'll the grades needed to at least get it mostly covered and we can help fill in the gaps here and there.
But if they decide to go to school in California or something, more power to you, but that's 100% on you buddy

Yes, if they can afford it. I didn't have to pay, both kids got accepted to USAFA. They said, 'Dad you won the lottery'. :) I did, but would have paid their tuition to another school (which I told them) if they turned down the free ride.
