I finally got to compare an Asian airline (Asiana) business class to a domestic business class (United).
Talk about night and day from quality of the seat, to service, to actually good not just edible food.
However, almost any business lie flat is better than economy. I don't think I'll ever go back for the long hauls. It quite substantially changes your vacation satisfaction by a lot.

You do realize you're in an aluminum tube traveling at 500 mph over 40 thousand feet above the earth? As a pilot, frick off.
Yeah and the pilots do so much up there.
Drive fast down a straight road until the laws of nature take you into the air. Gently move control surfaces until a computer tells you that you're on the right course, unless of course the computer does it for you. Drop flaps, reduce power, fall gradually to the ground. Yay pilots!

Delta's especially after you factor in the US Airways fleet.
If you're flying AA for short domestic routes chances are you're going to be on an MD 82/83 which are really pushing their limit these days.
At least on Delta it's going to be an MD 88 or 717 which is considerably younger.

It is a great plane. Only Lufthansa, Korean, and Air China are currently flying the 747-800i for commercial passenger use.
Not the way Lufthansa operates it. It's a terrible trans-Atlantic option. They keep the cabin way too hot. People were passing out on my last flight.

Those are some of my favorites for domestic routes.

AA has less than 100 MD80s in their active fleet right now. It is mostly 737-800s and A319s on short domestic routes.
I hate the new 319s, too cramped with the seating and IFE. I like the old MD80s, pretty quiet if you're sitting in front of the wings.

I think markets you fly out of impacts plane age dramatically. Delta out of Dallas is mostly new planes. I've flown a lot of the routes and I love the planes especially to SLC.
