It could easily, but I am fairly certain it wouldn't. The situation in Charleston was ripe for such an event. Yet there was a peaceful protest and then it quieted down. We in the south have gotten used to coexistence I think. My impression of the south pre civil rights movement, from stories I have been told, is that there was a mutual agreement of sorts between races. Not quite respect, but close. Except for hyper racists, which there were a lot of back then, everyone pretty much went about their day. I'll take care of mine, you take care of yours kind of thing. No one went out of their way to start a quarrel. They just did their thing. The CRM changed things, for the better, but I think the years of mutual coexistence helped race relations in the long run. Both races knew the other was mostly good, just wanted peace and to be able to get along.
For all of the reputations the south has earned. The idea that the SE is still the most racist part of the country is the least accurate. It is by far the North/Midwest/NE. Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Western New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine are all chock full of those who look down on other races. I will say the we have more hardcore racists down here, but a much higher percentage of the population in those states is racist. At least, in my experience, which is extensive. I have a lot of friends in the NE, my wife's family is from PA, and I lived in Ohio 3 separate times. Janesville, Wisconsin and Miamisburg. Ohio played tag for decades for the right to be considered the most racist city in the US. The NE just keeps it under wraps, it stems from this idea theh that people born in the NE are inherently better than anyone born elsewhere. Outside of the big cities, those states are very, very, very white, and they like it that way.
Your assertion regarding segregation is partially correct. It depends on the city. Dayton, OH, for example, is kind of similar to Birmingham as far as distribution of races inside city limits and the suburbs. It is a bit less segregated, but only because of the amount of newly poor whites who moved into those areas. Thanks to GM dipping out of town.
On the subject at hand:
Let's give the feds another reason to keep pushing for the militarization of police. Brilliant. If they got violent with cops say, after they tried to stop a peaceful protest, I would be more inclined to condone a physical action. The deeds currently being perpetrated are not conducive to fixing the matter at hand. They are espousing against something that is valid issue, but then this reinforces the very thing they are espousing against. At least, in the minds of those in power, and some to some degree everyone who is afraid to drive through certain areas at night. This is simply proving in many minds that the average inner city of a major populace is a place of violence. Which it is.
No one on a national level wants to talk about black on black violence. Everyone is scared of it. No one riots or protests in Detroit when an average of 2 black men, between the ages of 15-24, are killed a week. Every week. It hurts my heart, it truly does, to see young lives snuffed out on such a consistent basis. As a human it hurts, and as a youth pastor who has a heart for kids the heartbreak goes to the very core of me. Such wanton loss over nothing. Territory, drugs, even clothing has sparked deaths. You see the evidence of that attitude all over Baltimore right now. Ever picture I see is full of young adults and teens.
