If you have a family history you can’t. My mom was diagnosed at 45 and the recommendation is to start having scopes 10 years before the immediate family members diagnosis. I’ve been having them every 5 years since 35. Her Father my Grandfather had it at 56, her at 45, both survived.

- false positives; not as reliable as colonoscopy so you could be out the money & hassle and still have to go through the real thing
- see #1; insurance companies typically pay for a colonoscopy but if you've already done the cologuard test and still need a full colonoscopy to confirm, you're paying out of pocket
- colonoscopy will remove any polyps found so you get a 2-fer in that its extremely reliable and if anything abnomral is found they can not only remove them but also submit for a biopsy
so dont believe the tv commercials

get a physical and a colon check, its not that bad. just do it. Did my first at 50 clean next one is next year. think every 4 or 5 years

If you are 40, start getting colonoscopies, especially if you have a family history of polyps.

Who would have thought Jon Voigt would be one on the last ones standing from Varsity Blues

Because it's good but not as effective at detecting precancerous polyps:
Studies show Cologuard is roughly 42% effective at detecting high-risk precancerous lesions, while it is about 92% effective at detecting actual colorectal cancer.
And if it detects one of those high risk lesions you get to have a colonoscopy anyway.

Do they recommend everyone get a colonoscopy even if under 45 and no history?
You can certainly pay for it out of pocket if you want to before 45 (I believe mine would've been about $13k) but you're almost certainly fine waiting until then when insurance will cover it.

One of the few Hollywood "stars" I've met in person. Met him on the street in NYC and talked for a few minutes. He was hanging out with Krysten Ritter at the time. Really decent guy.

wait until you turn 45 and it's covered and go get one, and if you experience issues before then go get checked out.

Guys, TELL your doctor you want a colonoscopy. This shite is wrecking the 35-50 age group right now. The recommended testing age hasn’t been changed in decades.
I was diagnosed with stage 1 at 36 and had symptoms. I was incredibly lucky. Some can be stage 3+ with no symptoms. It’s just drinking a nasty Tang tasting thing, poop your brains out for a night, then get put to sleep so they can camera your butt. It’s not bad.
I’ve had so many friends get one early due to my diagnosis and several had pre-cancerous polyps.

i think its free at 45? with insurance, used to be later like 50 or 55. someone will know different. you just ask you GP and get it checked. the finger in the arse is weird for sure. but the camera part is not weird you are passed out. Always good for us (BAWS) to get a check. Never know.
and like most people that get cancer are doing great or no signs and then WHOA shite I have cancer.
better safe.
In fact this should be a whole separate topic on here. Get checked

Blood when I wiped and in the toilet bowl, escalated more and more over a few years. I was in my late 20s and immediately diagnosed with internal hemmeroids (sp?) without a second thought due to my age. It would happen for a few days then go away for months at a time. Took me 5-6 years to get to someone that took it seriously and put me in the front of the line for a colonoscopy.
I got very, very lucky to only have stage 1.

What sucks is that the indication is still 45-50 for screening. So, he had to have symptoms to get evaluated, and that means progression. Just a no-win situation.
yeah, he said he was having irregular bowel movements. Changed his diet up, that didn't help so he got checked and it was cancer.

I can't speak to his specific situation, but if someone in your family has had it you should start at 40.
