It will instill some confidence in your kid and help them deal with the typical youth issues of growing up. But make no mistake, judo is close contact stuff that means your in the strike zone of a punch or kick which can quickly remove any advantage.

Did I miss the part where the OP asked about Judo?

My entire family practices BJJ: my kids (7 yo boy, 11 yo girl) have been doing it about 3-4 years. My wife and I are mid ranked blue belts and have been in a little over 3 years.

It absolutely instills confidence and appreciation for physical fitness. It is also the best martial art for self defense since the vast majority of physical altercations wind up on the ground. This probably means nothing to you right now but find a school that incorporates wrestling takedowns and Judo throws. You need an emphasis on self defense from standing position as opposed to schools who just focus on guard pulling and sports jiu jitsu.

And it truly is amazing how much you can control someone who is much larger and stronger than you with proper control and technique. My wife who is 5'1 115 lbs regularly controls and taps men who are much larger than she is.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an offshoot of Judo. Mitsuyo Maeda was a highly ranked Judoka in Japan who brought the martial art style of Judo to Brazil. There he taught his techniques to the Gracie brothers who refined and adapted the Judo techniques more to the ground game of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu we know today.

Yes, it is absolutely worth it for all of reasons listed in this thread. My advice would be to try all of the schools in your area. Every gym has their own vibe and you should find out where you are most comfortable before signing a contract.

I know, but they are two different things. Where judo focuses more on throwing and standing manuevers, and BJJ focuses more on the ground game. I just thought it was funny how his entire post talked about judo as if they are they exact same thing.

My bad. i honestly was thinking ju-jutsu and never picked up on the jui miss. Brazilian wasn't around back then (at least popular wise) so that was a big swing and miss for me.

FWIW the guy in "Bloodsport " that fought Brazilian style got his azz-kicked .

I've been taking BJJ off and on for years now. My kids are involved in everything (football, baseball, basketball, dance, cheer, gymnastics, etc) but I always take them to BJJ when they're in between activities or summer mornings.

If I could choose 1 sport for my son and only 1 it would be BJJ.

MWP,

We send her to MAT on Rayford.

LINK

We knew nothing about martial arts but Michael Black was recommended to us...classic mix of 4th dan instructor plus teaching metaphysics and mental strength.

Do it. My kid is a tall but rather weak kiddo. Good kid but nothing to a big bully. Put him in bjj about 6 months ago. I did it years and years ago and know it’s awesome and can turn you into a beast. Anyways first class my kid was a fish out of water getting schooled. Fast forward 6 months and he’s at least holding his own. Which is a minor miracle in and of it’s self. Watching your meek kid slip to mount off a scramble is akin to watching him hit a homer lol. So long story short is do it.

At our BJJ gym, it’s amazing to see the kids go from no confidence, to high levels of it. That’s great no matter what, but then add to it, that BJJ is an extremely effective martial art (unlike karate or others).

Other good ones are Judo, Wrestling, Boxing, and Kickboxing

Wrestling

Great crossover sport to BJJ. Honestly, most straight up BJJ schools don't give take-downs or take down defense near enough training but as wrestling continues to grow in high schools and these kids migrate into BJJ schools after wrestling, you get more and more exposure.

Honestly, a good BJJ school with some solid wrestlers that have some quality Judo guys as well is like utopia.

Put my daughter (no pic) in martial arts when she was 8. Did wonders for her confidence. She's 21 now and excelling in this world.

My four year old does it.

She enjoys it and gymnastics. She’s paying better attention in class and at Pre-K

She’s still a little young to see the full benefits but I can tell small subtle differences

Karate can be beneficial

The karate school boom in the 70’s led to mcdojo’s. It’ll happen to BJJ as well if the schools focus only on sport bjj

Provides invaluable experience being comfortable in uncomfortable situations and how to deal with physically aggressive people.

BJJ is a form of Kosen Judo which is what Mitsuyo Maeda taught.

Judo was the form of what Kano considered the safest yet practical moves since Japan transitioned from feudal samurai to empire/western civilization

Btw there is a book called Choque (I’m guessing it’s Portuguese for choke) which details the early jiu jitsu days in Brazil (early 1900’s)

I’m gonna have to buy it

Does he go to Gracie United? That's a book widely recommended, but especially by Professor Robbie Gautreaux

Yeah, he does. But he read all 3 of them about a year before he started. I haven’t heard Robbie mention them but it’s probably universally recommended around the jiu jitsu community. They’re written by Jocko Willink who’s a big name. Probably the biggest in the leadership, discipline world right now.

For a workout and discipline, maybe that's true. But it is not good for defense.
