So you agree that for someone putting 500+ highway miles a week on their car that a TDI could be an economical option?

I drive about 3000 miles/month with 80% highway use. I'm really considering one of these when I'm in the market next year

Aubie I really want you to go into more detail than just "isn't worth it" that's not a compelling way to win adiscussion

Of course it could be an economical option. I'm sure that's very appealing for that 5-10% of American workers.

I drive quite a bit too and the four tanks that i have tracked "pencil and paper" habe been 32,36,39,37 mpg

I'd say its 50/50 hwy and city on those. Maybe 60/40 to the city side on the first tank. What kind of full sized car is there that can do that? Sorry I have a Passat.

I was shopping for a new car a couple years ago b/c I wanted to stop driving my truck to work. At the time I had a commute that ranged from 10-30 minutes depending on what office I was going to (IME this is pretty average for A LOT of people). I made a list of cars that got over 35mpg. Calculated how many dollars/month I would spend in gas and then compared that to sticker price. As far as VW goes the cost of running the TDI over non diesel options (including the non-tdi jetta) with slightly less MPG made it such that it would take me at least 4.5 years to offset the increased sticker price. It's not that hard to figure out.

EDIT: If you're not very tech savy you also have to figure in the increased cost for maintenance on a VW. You're gonna pay a lot more for parts and labor on those cars.

If you're like the golfer guy that's busting out more miles than a trucker than, ya, I'm sure it's a good option. Everyone knows diesel engines last longer and the increased gas mileage is great for highway drivers. If you're like the rest of us it's not wroth it IMO.

4.5 years is nothing. If you're buying cars quicker than that your car buying advice is void

Not sure where I said that I was buying them every 4.5 years??? I just dont want to wait that long before I see the benefit of the TDI.

I agree they cost more. I got a 100,000 mile warranty for like 900 bucks.

There's no good answer when buying a car.. But I think a diesel that goes good gas milage and hooefully long life is a reasonable purchase. Plus its not a boring 4 banger accord that everyone drives.

By that argument you should by the cheapest possible car you can buy. What benefit does an accord have over a 13,000 corola?

A good point with your last sentence. Having a cool looking car (which the VWs def are) is worth a little more to some people. I dont care about that all for a car that I use for commuting.

I don't agree that my statement suggests this

When I had to unwilling buy my car I drove about 15 things. From an e class Benz to an acura tsx. The Passat wound up in the same price class as a Lexus is250 but the Passat was just so much more car it was an easy choic... Mileage olayed into the pricing as everything I drove was used... Except a Hyundai genesis r-spec.... Thats what I really wanted but when you look at fuel difference between that thing and a TDI you barf

Hobson's choice. Put your kid in a Toyota or a Honda or a Subaru for the same price and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they're safe and that you won't be bankrupted by repair bills next year and the year after.

Yeah. Doesn't matter where.

Have you ever owned one? They are much safer. Not being an arse. Just a question.

but don't let the fuel mileage go to your head. You'll eat your fuel savings in maintenance.

From everything I've read, this simply isn't true since around 2011, especially with the tdi's.

Let me get out a little more information about the TDI.

I own one and I'm an engineer for a major Diesel engine company, so I know a little bit about this stuff.

For one thing, the EPA rating is bullshite. It's rated for 42mpg highway, and the worst tank I've seen since buying it was 42mpg. I keep a spreadsheet on my fuel consumption and travel speed and at about 64 mph you're getting a legit 60mpg with the manual transmission on flat ground. At 80mph you're getting about 45mpg. The fuel mileage is incredible. My worst tank since buying it was 42ish mpg, and that was a whole lot of Baton Rouge traffic.

To boot, the motor is very powerful for an economy car. It'll pin you back in the seat and is about like driving a v6 mustang.

The negatives are maintenance. The new ones are tier 4 Diesel engines that will require a dpf change somewhere around 100k-135k miles, and that is a several thousand dollar service. The timing belt has to be changed at 120k and that is roughly an $800 job. You have to be incredibly anal about maintenance with these engines.

Get an automatic and you're hit with a pretty expensive DSG service at 40k. The car has 10k mile scheduled maintenance intervals which you can expect to run you around $400 each with a few expensive ones in there.

If anything breaks out of warranty you're fricked. Any job on these cars requires specialty tools that you can't afford for one job.

All that said, it's a badass car. It gets better fuel mileage than a Prius while being pretty damned fast and fun to drive. When I crunched the numbers on mine, with my commute I will be coming out ahead in 2 years over a typical economy car and that is factoring in a very generous maintenance budget. When you drive the miles I do you come out ahead money wise assuming you unload it before the dpf change. If you're putting 8k miles a year on it, you'll never come out ahead.

Just know what you're getting. It's a very impressive piece of engineering that requires money inputs to keep in good shape.

A salesman told me the mpg estimate was so low because they test it on hills.

I had an 06. I bought it for 23,000....I had it for 2 years and put 80,000 miles on it(did most maintenance myself...rear brake pads, fuel filter, oil changes) I traded it in on a used truck and got 19,000 for the trade.

Best return I ever expect to see on a used car. It was an awesome car too. Brakes didn't get warped and steering didn't shimmy like a honda nissan or Toyota would with 80,000 miles.
