quote:An excellent summary, tho Kias are not Hondas by any stretch.
It's a really nice car compared to other base-level cars, but don't let the fuel mileage go to your head. You'll eat your fuel savings in maintenance. The difference is you get a pretty nice car that's very fun to drive, unlike the kia's and Hondas of the world.

I got a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, I know it's not a Kia but they are owned by the same company. I love my car so I would go with the Kia

Diesels hold their value very well and you can expect a much better resale on a 100k mile diesel than a 100k mile gasser with all other things equal.
Of course you have a significantly higher purchase price up front with all else equal.
It's just something you have to put numbers to in order to really find the best compromise of financial intelligence and being happy with what you bought. The first is not the same for much of anybody, and the second can't be determined by anybody other than the buyer and might matter more than the numbers anyway.
The information is out there for you to figure out how much pretty much any vehicle is going to cost you over an 8-10 year stretch with reasonable accuracy.
What really sold me mine was that compared to my girlfriends corolla, the Jetta felt like a luxury car.
ETA: just to interject my opinion, the average fuel economy for somebody who does a ton of driving around town and not much highway time would probably be around the mid to high 30's. I get very high numbers because I drive 150 miles a day on the interstate.

Have not considered Subaru. Are they worth looking at? Don't know much about them.

I personally like the Mazda CX-5 better than the Subaru. Better mpg and more fun to drive. As far as Hybrids go, the Camry is tough to beat.

I honestly didn't look at them hard enough when I bought mine. I made a bit of an impulse purchase because the exact car I wanted was in BR and the next closest one was in Houston. Subaru makes good stuff, but I don't know anything about their lower end stuff.

We put 15-20k on my wife's tdi per year. According to the computer, we average 40 mpg. And that's more city than highway by a lot. I liked the idea of a diesel, liked the car, liked filling up once to make a trip to Florida, and saw the INCREDIBLE resale values out there for these vehicles. I was going to buy a year old used one, but couldn't find one cheap enough to justify buying used. In the end we paid about 3k more for the tdi over the gas, but I'm not complaining.

I own a Subaru Forester for the last three and half years and have liked it so far. I live in south GA, so of course the AWD is not critically important as there is no snow. But I still like having the AWD as it gives me great handling, and because the car handles great in rain. When I buy again I will again look for a Subaru or another AWD car. So OP, if possible go drive one.
