Secure backup files are an often overlooked part of ITSEC

I'm hearing the backups were compromised.

Websites, Email, & Internet for the Office of the Governor, Louisiana State Legislature, Office of Motor Vehicles, Department of Corrections, Secretary of State, Department of Transportation, Louisiana Department of Health, Division of Administration, and more are affected.

You’re right, not a hardware / infrastructure guy who normally deals with this kind of shite.

How can we take the results of the election until they can prove that the systems were not compromised during the election period.

What you should really be thinking is "is this a bad actor making money on his way out of the system after the larger thing he did?"

More importantly, HOW CAN WE TAKE THE ELECTION SERIOUSLY UNTIL THEY CAN PROVE THE SYSTEMS WERE NOT COMPROMISED DURING THE ELECTION.

This should be under massive investigation. The levity on the state should be to proof they were not compromised instead of everyone just shrugging because they don't understand.

This assumes the backup archives didn’t get controlled as well.

The amount of data these days is really too large to be doing tape backup or any other traditional physical backup as opposed to transmission over the network.

If the network is compromised and they gained control of everything before showing their hands, it could all be fuc

It’s possible but hopefully they weren’t able to encrypt the Veeam and Commvault backups. I’ll pour one out for them tonight.

It’s horrifying. I just had a talk with my intern to reinforce least-privilege access and using 2FA.

I should have added that the Louisiana Secretary of State's website and system are also down and part of the ransomware attack.

Technical difficulties delay Rapides Parish early voting results

Doubtful they had administrative rights to anything critical or were dumb enough to use state email accounts

What I see a lot of times are computers brought in by contractors to run a new application or some other niche focused task. I’ve seen computers with all security features including UAC turned off that the on premise IT guys had no clue was even there

One Point of Sale machine gave all users admin privileges. Some minimum wage cashier got bored and downloaded a “free” movie. BOOM credit card #’s were being cached for later offload

SOS was not compromised. They had a dependency on DNS la.gov servers that were locked down.

They will no doubt move DNS to AWS and SOS will come back online. The election systems are air-gapped from the SOS network, anyway. Completely different people.
