LASIK eye surgery should be taken off market, ex-FDA adviser says

quote:

"Essentially we ignored the data on vision distortions that persisted for years," said Morris Waxler, a retired FDA adviser who voted to approve LASIK. He now says that vote was a mistake.

"I re-examined the documentation … and I said, 'Wow this is not good,'" Waxler said.

Waxler said his own analysis of industry data shows complication rates between 10 and 30%. In 2011, he petitioned the FDA to issue a voluntary recall of LASIK. Three years later, the agency denied that request and now tells CBS News it "has not found any new safety concerns associated with LASIK devices."

Waxler said he thinks LASIK should "absolutely" be taken off the market. "There's nothing wrong with a person's eyes who goes to get Lasik," he said. "They have healthy eyes. They could go and get a pair of glasses."

I had PRK done in January and would do it all over again if I had to. With that being said, if you're vision is bad enough to warrant PRK, do not believe the doc when they tell you it will be "mild to moderate" paid. When my eyes gained sensitivity back from the numbing drops it legitimately felt like someone was holding my eye lids open and pouring lemon juice on them. This persisted for around 3-4 days. Recovery was also a mother trucker. 2-3 weeks before I could return the font size on my monitors back to normal.

I hear lasik recovery and pain is much different/easier. Get the wavefront lasik if you are a candidate. In regards to insurance, usually the doctor will just beat whatever discount they offer so they dont have to deal with them. Best of luck

Got it done in 2016. Was blind as a bat since I’ve been 8 years old. Worn glasses/contacts for 20 years.

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Seeing 20/20. Eyes do get drier now so I use drops every now and then (mostly in the mornings) but worth the trade off imo.

If I can get another 20 years out of the procedure (30 now) before having to wear reading glasses I’ll take it.

Of course, the anti-circumcision guy is anti-lasik! But, for real, I remember someone telling me an ophtalmolgist said something to the effect of, this is the only surgery where we make the body weaker, and it's a bad idea.

Best money i've ever spent. $4200 = 20/15 vision. been that way since surgery(6 years). recovery was 1 day, drove to post op the next day. Dr. Mary Green in Houston is the best, she fixes people who had botched surgeries and i think is the chief corneal surgeon .

Married meteorologist mother-of-two 'is among at least 11' who have killed themselves after laser eye surgery

quote:

A well-known Michigan TV meteorologist and mother-of-two is allegedly one of at least 11 people who have killed themselves after suffering complications from Lasik laser eye surgery, according to a well-known online support group.

Jessica Starr, 35, took her own life on Wednesday, one month after telling fans that she was struggling to recover from the surgery she got so she could finally stop wearing contact lenses.

no thank you. i'll continue to wear glasses and not risk fricking up my perfectly healthy eyes and going blind.

X had it done in around 2000. Her eyes slowly reverted back and she can't see good at night at all. "Spider webs" around lights and not confident to drive at night.

I'll stick w/ contacts personally.

I had it done in 2004, and I still say to this day that it was the best money I ever spent.

Had it done at age 46. Best decision ever. Doctor told me that I would still have to wear reading glasses because of my age.

Didn't have to start wearing readers until about 12 years later.

As others have mentioned, don't go cheap. I had mine done at Williamson in BR.

I got it shortly after turning 21. I've gone a couple decades without glasses now but I am considering readers.

My wife's LASIK was already useless after 8 years.

All depends on the Dr and the eyes they have to work with.

My big issue was after everything I went a long time with a lot of "bleed" from lights at night. So every source looked like a huge nativity star.

And Blue lights like Zaxbys sign are unintelligible to me at night still.

had it done almost 15 years ago. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

Recovery...well, they sent me home with an Ambien and told me to nap the rest of the day. That was awesome. The next day I could see distances perfectly, but for a couple of weeks, it took my eyes a second or 2 to focus near to far, far to near.
(I could see it happening, like focusing a camera lens).

The only downside is I had to start using cheap cheater reading glasses, but the advantages over contacts or having to wear distance glasses 90% of the time are more than worth the trade off

PS: I also went to Williamson. They told me lifetime guarantee. If I ever need a 'tune up", supposedly no charge

I wanted to get LASIK when i first heard about it 20 yrs ago.. almost everyone i know who’s had it done says its worth every penny and they love it.. BUT i have known a few people who have had complications, from mild to severe.. and in the last couple of years I’ve read a lot of stories (some mentioned in posts above) about people who’ve had debilitating pain and in some cases had committed suicide.. I realize the odds say you’re much more likely to fall into the group who loves it, and if you’re the kinda person who usually goes through stuff and comes out smelling like a rose, then go for it.. but if you’re like me, where Murphy’s Law seems to apply pretty often, if anything can go wrong, it *will* go wrong, or as my dad used to say “Son, if it wasnt for bad luck, you wouldnt have no luck at all”... then you’ll do like me and steer clear of LASIK.. i just know my luck too well, and *I* would be the guy in severe pain most likely... besides, I’m able to tolerate contacts most of the time, and wearing glasses the other times doesn’t bother me as much as it used to.

I had lasik 14 years ago. My vision sucks right at dusk and I have star burst around lights at night.. but I was damn near blind before.. I now have 20 20. I'd do it again in a heart beat.
