Would it look bad to just take my last 4 or 5 days of work off and use the PTO for it?
talk to your boss, see how they want you to handle it.

Yep.

It doesn't matter if the company would give it to you. Make the transition as easy as possible for your coworkers because they're the ones who are going to have to pick up your slack. Do a good job of transitioning your projects/workload/whatever before you jump ship and some time in the future it may pay off. You just never know.

I hear ya and would normally agree.

I am leaving the job b/c my co-workers are probably the 4 worst human beings on the face of the Earth. (I'm getting a 1.5x raise as well).

I'm going to leave on as good of terms as I can but it is a STRUGGLE coming to this place everyday.

FYI I am a physical therapist.

I'm leaving my current employer...gave them my two weeks. Found out this morning that my two weeks of vacation just turned over on August 1st and I'll be getting that in my last paycheck too.

I got laid off after 4 years with co.
They did give me 12 week severance, but in the end it was a phone call out of the blue saying I wasnt gonna be part of the new organization.
Company merge with another, sales territory overlap blah blah blah.
I got a 10% raise with new outfit, better insurance brand new vehicle and double dipped in salary for a month.
Sucked at first but in the end I came out ahead.

Suppose my point is nobody cares about you other than you.
Do what's best for you and your family.
Always.

There is nothing they could do except say you're not re-hireable. Do you care about that?

I don't care about that, but I do want to be compensated for my PTO which they claim they won't do if not given.

Did you contractually agree to this?

If he agreed to this by contract, they can require it.

Unfortunately, in the handbook, if I don't give 30 days notice then I get zero payout for my PTO.

I'd double check the exact wording of that. Because if it's as simple as you must give 30 days, then I see nothing wrong with giving notice and then taking the last 5 days as paid leave.

30 days is a lot of notice. It's not like you're putting in two weeks notice, and then only working a week and taking a week paid leave.

ETA: IT also depends on how said company requires you to take time off. My current job requires approval to take more than 3 days off in a row.

All of my PTO has to be "approved" but in the almost 3 years I've worked here, I've never been denied.

In assuming you've already put in the notice?

Why wouldn't you just put in notice 3-4 before?

If you've put in notice, just tell them you'd rather duck out a few days early. It'd save them a few bucks as I'm guessing by that point you won't really be a productive asset for them anymore.
