Kennedy has been saying this for years. Louisiana doesn't have a budget problem but a spending problem.
And, we have a constitution that needs to be blown up that allows them to gut healthcare and education only.

This. We should start over.

We are ranked 23th when it comes to which state has the biggest budget.. And ranked 25th in population.

Middle of the road budget is you account for the population of the state.

Louisiana has a current budget of $29 billion. The state is not poor.
Our taxes are insane here. All you hear about is income taxes. We pay income, property and sales taxes here. Plus countless other fines, licences, fees and taxes to the state. I don't know why anyone would want to come here to live or work unless you were raised here and have family.

Do you live in a box under a bridge? Ours is over 2k
No. I bought a house on the cheap and renovated it. We have homestead exemption here so you don't pay property tax in the first 75,000 of assessed value. We also have agricultural exemptions on acreage.

What does your roads look like?
Phenomenal. We even have the longest bridge over water in the world and it's over brackish water and it has its own police force and crossovers and drawbridges.
And it's $3 to cross round trip.
Last time I was in California the Golden Gate Bridge was $7.
Each way.
Last time I was in Texas I had to pay a toll to get on the interstate and a toll at each exit to get off.

What does your public schooling look like?
I believe it's the best or second best in the state. St Tammany Parish.
Doesn't really matter anyway. My kids will be home schooled and then later sent to a specialty school in New Orleans like NOCCA or one of the Waldorf or Montessori schools.

What does your job market outlook look like?
Doesn't matter. My wife owns her own business and does really well. We also own rental property. I work for myself.

I heard yesterday y’all had no water
I live in an unincorporated area of a semi rural Parish. I have a 300 foot well with my own pump and 120 gallon well tank. I don't have water problems.

Lol @ La tards bringing up our property tax. We still have a lower tax burden than La
Tax burden is highly individual with way too many variables. Our tax burden for my family is extremely low. It basically doesn't exist. A lot of our earned income is cash, we do 95% of our shopping online which isn't taxed since none of the products we order ever originate from this state and like I said our property tax is $75 per year.
I lived in Texas. Half my family lives in Texas. I understand the situation there. The only tax you can never get out of is your property tax which is why it's the most important one to avoid.
Louisiana has by far the lowest property taxes of any state in the nation. It's not even close. If that was the only reason to live in Louisiana that would be good enough for me. I would hate to own a hundred acres in a place like Connecticut.
Don't hate because I figured out how to win at life and you're still in the rat race.

$75 per year? That’s not saying a whole lot, fella.
Homestead exemption is the first $75,000 of the homes fair market value, i.e., 7,500 off of the assessed value.
To pay $75, your house would need to have been bought for barely over $75k.

A few points--
1)Our government in Louisiana sucks Georgia does run theirs better. Local governments do pay more of some things in Ga than they do in La but not enough to offset the difference in per capita state spending.
2)Higher ed is bloated and a political boondoggle that should be completely restructured. We need to close some institutions and end tenure and end defined benefit retirements. There is no political will power to do that.
I propose a drastic, better structure that would be game changing---the state should spin off all the higher education institutions into private entities and then take the money the state gives the schools and give it to students as vouchers to be used at any state higher institution. The student could keep any saving they have after using their voucher to shop for educations services. This will create real competition. It will release the institution of the very high cost of pensions and bloated administration. It will free the institution to charge what they want in fees and tuition. It will most importantly relieve the taxpayer from having to make the capital expenditures these dinosaurs require to stay in business.
Eduction would be better and cost would quit rising.
3) Number two would be the example to do the same with secondary education
4) medicaid should be subscription based with no completely free services. Even a $10 office visit would help in keeping abuse of the system down. We should give the poor medicaid vouchers to buy subscription plans for health care and again give them any saving they get from shopping. This will end the government's direct purchasing of health and it will make shopping for health care easier. It will also give high overhead medical providers a predictable income stream to cover cost.
Again a drastic measure that would eventually save hundreds of millions of dollars while increasing the quality of care
5) the state should tomorrow end direct subsidies of private businesses like the film makers
6) the homestead exemption and the 10 year industrial tax exemption should be eliminated. In the first year of this elimination property tax collection by local governments would be held level meaning the rates of property tax--the millages--would decline dramatically as the billions of dollars in untaxed property comes on the rolls. Many of today property tax payers would actually see lower taxes.
7) after doing number 6 the state should impose a local property tax sufficient to cover teacher salaries currently paid by the state THEN the state should quit paying teachers and let the local school boards pay them---THEN we could eliminate the income tax altogether and the local governments would have the most say in school teacher pay

Yes. My house was a wreck on 1/3 acre for $70K. I bought it for the structure, lot and location. The only things that matter. I then renovated it.
The first few years my prop tax was $0 since it was assessed at closing value. Since then its bounced between $0 and $75 depending on the year as assessments are adjusted based on market value changes thereafter for your zip code.
Its hard to get a value since the area is semi-rural so comps are slim but I would guesstimate the current renovated market value at around $190k.
Oh and buying in a $70k and then paying out of pocket for materials and taking the year off of work to spend every day renovating it myself meant $0 in labor costs so the house was paid off in 2.5 years.
Thats how you win at life. Sweat equity, baw.
