When the Odysseus32 types decided that staying at a rental made them kings and queens who were to be waited on and decided they shouldn't be accountable for trashing a place or don't need to practice common courtesies.
It's not a spa. It's a rental. Don't be slobs.

I’d clean that whole place spic and span before I left if I’d get the cleaning fee waived or refunded
But now airbnbs are just as expensive as hotels - so we just stay at hotels

There is a huge difference between being waited on like you're at a five-star resort and trashing the place.
I'm not sure where in the middle is the gray area of being required to do chores, take out all the trash, strip the sheets off the bed, etc, but it is a place that the general public is starting to reject and not find it worth paying for. Especially when you're already paying an additional fee which is supposedly for cleaning and doing the chores that you are required to do upon check out.

Obama and Biden fueled the skyrocketing cost of living. They scrape together whatever pennies they have left for a little vacay. They're already on edge because they can't afford it.
Then....They click on a place that’s $129 a night, feeling pretty good about themselves… and then the checkout screen hits them with a cleaning fee, a service fee, a “just because we can” fee, and instructions to take out the trash, run the dishwasher, and basically perform the closing duties of a small café. By the time they're done, they're not booking a weekend getaway — they're negotiating the terms of a mortgage.
The struggle is real.

Airbnbs are not hotels. If people want hotels, they should book hotels. We provide enough supplies to last a week. If that isn't enough, they should go purchase their own.
I almost never stay at hotels, even if an Airbnb is a bit more expensive. I love being able to stay in any part of a city, have multiple beds, and have a kitchen.

Thank god.
You shouldn’t. If you’re going to request that your guests clean your short term rental, you aren’t capable of running a short term rental.

If you book a hotel that has a kitchen and you leave your hotel with a sink full of dishes, you're just a douche. Same goes for an Airbnb. We don't ask guests to clean dishes, and we charge a small cleaning fee, but leaving a hotel or Airbnb with a sink full of dishes is just a dick move.
Also, cleaning a 300 sqft hotel room is a hell of a lot different than cleaning a 2000 sqft home with three bedrooms.

No. It isn't a dick move. You aren't my relatives, you aren't my friends. The transaction is me lodging for a few days. Cleaning is included. I've never stayed in an air bnb that didn't have a cleaning fee.
That's part of staying in a short term rental. You're charging me a cleaning fee. You clean the dishes. I'm not there to do dishes. I'm there to stay in a place.
Again, I don't stay in Air BnBs for this exact reason. I go to hotels where it's clear that the business owners have enough sense to not piss of their guests.
I don't care what you do. I'm telling you that you're wrong. Do with that info what you will.

The amount of rooms they clean doesn't matter. The point is that if you're booking a hotel or an Airbnb, the Airbnb is often much, much larger. Paying a cleaning fee makes sense. I don't agree with Airbnb hosts that charge large amounts to make money on the cleaning fee. We charge what our cleaners charge us, sometimes less actually.
For example, we have a 1500 sqft 3 bedroom, two bath pool house. We charge $130 for the cleaning fee and we pay the cleaners $160. Is that unreasonable?

Yep.
Taking an Uber gypsy-cab to my unregulated hotel Airbnb and getting food delivered by an uninsured illegal alien with no driver's license.
If there's a problem the first-time-part-time Airbnb host will use Angie's list to send out an unlicensed plumber to fix whatever's wrong.
Then we'll get home on a netjet with an owner teetering on insolvency with deferred maintenance as long as your arm.

We BnB/VBRO'd in Italy for 2 weeks
Most if not all places had a list of things to do, including sorting garbage and putting in the appropriate receptacle. They often had 4+ categories
That was the most onerous as the directions weren't always clear and sometimes contradictory.
I am surprised some of you even put the garbage in the can outside or dishes in the sink.

We have a house here in Italy. Garbage is a nightmare. There are four categories in the city where our house is. If you don't follow it then it is a huge PIA. They won't pick up the garbage, etc. I hate it, but it is what it is

The economics on this make no sense. I’m not paying the same nightly price as a hotel plus all the Airbnb fees like another nights cost for cleaning.
The only time Airbnb makes sense is for a large number and week long plus stay. Odysseus is being insane, but the premise of his post is insane. You as the manager of a short term rental are responsible for the upkeep of your property and preparing it for the next guest. It’s total bullshite you pass along the cost of cleaning, but then also expect me to do a good portion of it.
Economies of scale and being able to allocate maintenance and cleaning at hotels is what makes it a much more viable model. I’m not responsible for the entire cost of my “costs” at a hotel, but I am at an Airbnb. I’m out on the model, makes no sense for 90% of my travel.
You want to charge the same price, but provide less services

Here's one booking we had today:
$1,100 total paid by the guest. They are booking a 2/1.5 house with a pool. The cleaning fee is $120 and is included in the $1,100. They have three guests, a child, and a pet. Their stay is six nights. We will make about $750 on the booking after airbnb fees/cleaning fees.
Guest is paying less than $200/night for three adults, a child, and a pet. They have a living room, outdoor patio, fenced in backyard, dining room, and a full kitchen.
How in the world is that not better than a hotel? You can't even book a decent hotel in my area for less than $200/night. And that is only for one room.
