Brookhaven is your best bet. Can take 141/ashford dunwoody into work defending on where exactly you are. May have to go further out to chamblee to get something in your price range tho. There are a lot of complexes in Lenox park maybe start with those to get an idea on price. Post Brookhaven is a cheaper complex too

Atlanta.... less then 30 min commute.....this will get about 12 miles in Atl traffic
Im coming from Denver where the traffic is comparable if not worse. Had a less than 12 mile commute that would never be less than 30 minutes

quote:I was picking up a grill accessory at Cooks Warehouse the other day. I'm not a WF shopper but I always hear how good their meat department is. Since it was next door I stopped by to check it out. Maybe it was a restocking day, but it was by far one of the worst meat markets I've ever seen. They didn't even have whole chickens
However, that Whole Foods is straight garbage terrible customer service, terrible hot food bar, and terrible butcher.
Regardless of how shittybthat Whole Foods is, it always seems to be busy

Nope. You don't realize how bad Atlanta traffic is until you spend time in it.
According to sources that study this stuff the average commuter in Atlanta spends 70.8 hours in traffic each year. Good for the 8th worst in the world.
AJC
1. Los Angeles, California (104.1)
2. Moscow, Russia (91.4)
3. New York, New York (89.4)
4. San Francisco, California (82.6)
5. Bogota, Colombia (79.8)
6. Sao Paulo, Brazil (77.2)
7. London, England (73.4)
8. Atlanta, Georgia (70.8)
9. Paris, France (65.3)
10. Miami, Florida (64.8)

This. It’s not so much the average rush hour congestion (which is bad enough), it’s the unpredictable random crap that ends up doubling your already-long commute that kills you.
Having said that, the OP’s office is in a location that gives him some options. I don’t think he can really go wrong with Brookhaven, or Virginia Highlands. I also think the Avolon in Alpharetta is going to be big soon (It’s close to where I work).
But I’m a suburban Gwinnett guy so he should take that for what it’s worth

I live in Woodstock and love it but that be too much of a commute for normal business hours. Roswell alpharetta peachtree corners maybe to your liking. May want to spend 6 months or a year feeling out the city before making any big-time choices.

So does my wife. She loves the outlet mall anyway.
Woodstock is great though. If it wasn't so far from my job, we would have looked at houses there.

Pretty much every third or fourth day inside the loop.

$1000/month in those areas will get you a studio, maybe. I paid $1100/month for a 1 br apartment in Alpharetta for a year before buying a house in Woodstock last year.

Lindbergh Station area, slightly south or technically a part of Buckhead.
A lot of new towers going up in the area. #4 son is single, white -- lives there.
You'll be close enough for the work-commute, but also close enough to make a run at Midtown West, Inman Park, Piedmont Park or something happening downtown.
VaHi is a no go. Young, Yuppie families there now. #2 son is one.
Brookhaven would be closer to your commute, further from the cool venues (as I perceive them).

Nothing like sitting on 92 for an hour in the morning trying to get to 400. I hated having to get to Mansell from my house which is literally just inside the Cherokee county line on 92. 6 miles can take you 45 mins in the morning during the school year, it's nuts.

Where at? My parents live in a neighborhood off of Bascomb Carmel.

You talking about Holcomb Bridge Rd?

I've lived and worked in NE ATL for 25 years. Similar to you, I work just outside the perimeter on the NE side of town. I live inside the perimeter, so a reverse commute. Brookhaven fits your description best. Anything further in town than Buckhead, Lindbergh, Cheshire will have some bad commute implications. Sandy Springs, and just north of 285 would also work. Someone mentioned cheaper houses in Woodland Hills - I can vouch for that. It's a surprise pocket in town that's still affordable.

Based on your work location and budget, there aren't many places I'd consider as very desirable neighborhoods for young and single within 30 minutes.
One thought would be a house on the upper west side close to the Bellwood quarry. The park being built around the quarry and connecting beltline will increase property values. I-75 is nearby and you'd also a short drive to great restaurants and bars.
Brookhaven, north Buckhead, Sandy spring, and Dunwoody are worth considering for proximity, but they're not the most fun parts of town and again, your budget is limiting.
Also, all of this depends on the type of person you are. Are you a basic bama bro who likes to be around other white people wearing Polo shirts? If so, then the areas listed in paragraph above would work fine.

if youre planning on staying in ATL for a little while, it might now be a bad idea to check out the homes in West End. properties are being bought up like crazy because the belt line runs through there and the values of some of these homes are doubling and tripling in value.
however its SW ATL. and regardless of how much you dont mind traffic, be careful what you wish for. ATL traffic will test every nerve in your body. I suggest you find a place close to where you work. Brookhaven, Vinings, Virgina Highlands, etc would all work well for you
