but he is not particularly funny off the cuff with interviews.
Remembering when:
I saw a few Jack Parr broadcasts, maybe they were replays, but comedy and a hooting audience weren't a thing, then.
Late night doesn't have to be loud, it just has to be something you choose to watch as you wind down to go to sleep.
Keep the bimbos and influencers off and find people who can chat, pleasantly.
Carson brought new comics on and gave them a chance. Jack Parr had IIRC Einstein on to chat.
Retired politicians might have stories, so would truck drivers.
Look what Jeremy Clarkson has done with Diddly Squat Farm personnel.

That is what Tom Synder brought to late night TV when they started Tomorrow on NBC. Tom wanted to do a show where it was him and a guest to talk about different topics whether it was book or movie, or a new band. It was something to connect with the audience. He felt that people would have had enough of the hooting and hollering on TV since the Price is Right came on the air at 9 am.
But unfortunately, that type of TV didn't work and the network kept steering him to other things like adding a female cohost who he hated and even a studio audience before it got cancelled.

Late Night Shows are going the way of the Dodo bird.

How would Snyder's viewership then look when compared with the current crop of late night?

David Letterman
While I didn't watch him every night, I was a fan of Dave. I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but he never took himself too serious and after his monologue he let the show be about his guest.
I know promoting movies has changed and you don't have to go on a late night show anymore.. At one point that was part of promoting a movie.. Going on late night, but he would always try to make the guest feel comfortable and wanted them to relax.. So they would feel more comfortable about talking to him.. Opening up more.
Then he had different segments.. Stupid pet tricks. The week leading up to the Kentucky Derby he would just randomly say "and down the stretch they go"..
He would make a joke or two about politicians in the monologue and that was it. Then when Colbert replaced him, Colbert made it into more of a political show.. Kimmel did the same.. Not as bad as Colbert but it was obvious they were pushing an agenda. They were saying late night was dead towards the end of Letterman's time, but if you put on a true entertainer who doesn't get political.. Making a joke here and there about current events involving something political, but people don't want to hear all of that shite at 11PM..
But someone who knows how to entertain. Someone who would be a little edgy for network tv. More people will tune in, but then make it available. The show can have a you tube page, air it live on you tube as well and then having it available there people can watch whenever they want to.

Johnny Carson always made it clear that he wasn’t going to get into politics and he was known to be a Liberal.

“Why do they think since you have a ‘Tonight Show,’ you will deal with serious issues? That’s a danger. That’s a real danger. Once you start that, you start to get that self important feeling, that what you say has great import. And you know, strangely enough, you could use that show as a forum, you could sway people. And I don’t think you should as an entertainer”
Jimmy Kimmel certainly fell into the trap and I think rating suffered. He alienated a lot of people with his “comedy”.
