If the east coast, spec. NY & NJ there would be wall to wall coverage.
MSM optics: Sandy>>>Katrina because devastating beach erosion and businesses damaged...
Both were bad for all involved. Just saying that if NY-NJ had a 500 year flood, all networks would devote most of their day to coverage.

Every year towns flood and we see them on the National news. Then the next day it is something else and we all forget those town names and or the event itself.
When the story is local we all want the spotlight to be bigger and last longer.
Sucks but that is the way it is
I do feel for the folks that flooded.
This is true. Are people expecting to receive the coverage Katrina received? When its an election year there are many stories that go on deaf ear.

I don't think anyone is expecting that kind of coverage.
I'm seeing national coverage...but what I saw yesterday and this am....wasn't much. Tiny segments sandwiched in between human interest stories.
Maybe it has gotten better since then. I don't think anyone is expecting full day nonstop coverage on this. I think most people are just wishing for a little bit more coverage on it that is all. This isn't your typical flooding story.

The reason this is not a big deal nationally is because the people of Baton Rouge and surrounding areas came together as a community to help each other in a time of need. Nobody cared if they were black, white, gay, straight, Catholic, Gypsy, or anything, they just extended their hands and helped. If we would have had shootings and looting, they would be all over it, sadly.

National news media?
Have been pathetic for a long time now.

Another reason why I would have expected a tad more coverage....BR has very recently been in the media spotlight with all the shooting/protests/police shooting stuff.

WRONG! We don't care because white people are being racist towards Gabby Douglas. That's more important.

People outside of Louisiana, don't give a shite about Louisiana.

I consider myself an informed person. I read news every single day. If not for this board, I would have absolutely no idea that flooding was occurring in Louisiana.

No political angle.
The national media doesn't care about something like this unless they can use it to advance one of their pet narratives.
There isn't a political/racism angle in the BR area floods that they can use so they don't care.

What news sites do you read that has not said anything about the flooding in Louisiana?

Yes. It's a double standard, but I think in a disconnected way it's pretty easy to make sense of.
Unless it impacts a major city it just won't get much play for very long. I consume a ton of news, and vaguely remember hearing about some serious flooding in the St. Louis area sometime this year. Prior years? Forget about it.
Flooding so often happens in areas that are flood prone that people tune it out in a "well I guess that's sort of how life goes out there" sort of way. Honestly, absent the death toll and race angle (which were connected) the Katrina devastation would have faded pretty quickly.
Floods are likely the most common natural disaster and the most difficult for media to convey. IRL I assume they're terrifying, but it's hard to make that known to the general population in a way that generates interest. Now tornados, hurricanes, fires sweeping through neighborhoods? Different story.

I've heard it on national news. It was on Today this morning. But I just went to FNC and CNN and it is buried on their pages, so I agree that's pretty ridiculous.

It's a 500 year fricking flood event. I lived through Katrina and now this. This is every bit as bad. But there will be no President shaming no Obama hates black people statements and it will be forgotten. We don't even get the iconic photo of Bush looking out the window at the flooding because this President cares so much he played another fricking round of golf for us.

I saw it on the national news at the gym
And saw it on the Houston local news in the break room

This is absolutely terrible, but come on. Damage wise in BR? Sure
Over 1k died in Katrina. You weren't even allowed to enter New Orleans for weeks to months after the storm. The entire Mississippi gulf coast looked like it was bombed.

Except when it's Katrina. Then it's a national issue, racism is involved, telethons are held and celebrities come out of the woodwork

Barely anyone in my office in Nashville realized what was going on.
I mentioned to one of my coworkers that I have merchandise that is shipping to Baton Rouge, but my client probably doesn't give two shits about it right now because of the flooding. He was like, business still needs to run even with some flooding. He had no clue.

Not making a judgment call against all of the other stories like this (like N LA last year, for example), but one check in the "noteworthy" column is that we are a Capital region. Would the coverage be different if this were Austin? I think it might be but I don't think national news media cares that much about TX either but it likes Austin because it's weird and brisket or some crap.
One thing for sure is that the national media's power is in what it doesn't show.
