Bahrain is even better. I would go once a week for R&R.
You could buy beer, wine and alcohol there. They even sell pork.
The US has a Navy base there. Plenty of Americans.

So he'll be commuting daily from Bahrain to KSA? Where in KSA will his office be? I've been told that bridge is very busy S-T.
Posted on 6/10/19 at 5:50 pm to redstick13
Bridge is about a 30-40 minute ride during rush hour. It all depends on how many check points are open at the time.
Get in the far left lane and stay there.

That sounds far better than living in Saudi Arabia. Less restrictive society. Not as good as living in Doha, Abu Dhabi, or Dubai, but definitely a better option. I would guess all three of those would have more expats though.
I visited a colleague in Abu Dhabi and he really had a great quality of life. All of his coworkers were from Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, etc. He lived rent free in a luxury hotel suite, and since he isn’t a US citizen, he basically paid no taxes.
Eta: I can see Bahrain having the largest expats per capita since it’s so small. With sheer numbers though, UAE is surely number one though.

Are there job markets for pretty much anyone to go work over there? Or is this primarily an O&G thing.

Pros...he can become a millionaire in a few years
Cons...terrorism, sandstorms, only gets to see family 2 weeks per year, jerking is is probably his only option, jody will visit his wife
The pros outweigh the cons by a long shot. And the cons aren't anything to worry about.
Terrorism? Turn off the news and go about your daily life.
Sandstorms? West Texas has that.
His family is traveling with him, and if they weren't and he has to worry about Jody, he could always open a personal account for the majority of his money to go into so he isn't broke.
This is a great opportunity for him and his family. They will get to experience living in a foreign place and make a great living. There are no cons if you ask me.

My colleague was in academia. He got a doctorate at LSU and went to this university in Abu Dhabi and stayed for about a decade.
There are teachers at international schools making good money (I believe very low six figures). Engineers and construction industry people, also lots of insurance/banking types. Most of those appear to be Swiss or British though, from what he said.
I doubt there are a lot of creative industry jobs like advertising, marketing, etc. Seems like it’s more for engineering, finance, and energy, plus teaching.

It's not your decision.
Maybe you don't recall typing this...
Let me clarify...It's not your decision, nor is it the OP's decision.
It does indeed seem pathetic to me.
I did not say it was pathetic, just that it seems that way to me. That is a truth. Perhaps you're unable to differentiate between truth and opinion.
What seems even more pathetic to me, is that you come in here wanting to "white knight" about my comment.
Maybe you should just STFU and downvote if it makes you feel good.
You don't seem to have offered much to this thread either, but thanks for your efforts!

Tax free means he is going to be a resident in Saudi. So that'll be 11 months out of the US & he can visit for 1 month.
frick that. It’d have to be at least half a million a year for me to even consider that.

Bahrain will have a higher cost of living that Saudi. Expect rent to be really high and for the landlords to expect 1 full year of rent paid up front.
It's important to know what his company will be providing and what he will be responsible for himself. It's also important to know if his company will be covering his US tax burden or not. Either way he should plan to be in the 37% tax bracket which will apply to everything he makes above $104k and will need to be paid in full at the end of the tax year since he will likely be filing as "Tax Exempt".
I've done 2 international assignments on rotation and two international assignments as a live in. I turned down a 3rd live in offer which was to live in Bahrain and work in KSA.

Working on international rotation sucks. It would be absolutely idiotic and selfish to try it with a family.
It’s one thing if you fly out to China or Japan once a month, but yeah, to do that to a family where you can only visit a month a year? frick that. Saudi Arabia is nowhere to raise a family.

I lived in Thailand as a kid for 3 years, dad was in oil and gas. Spent about a month each year in US, not a big deal.
Now Thailand was the shite, loved it. Saudi Arabia, I'd have to think long and hard about. Dont think I'd bring kids there. If it was just me and wife though, I'd go in a heartbeat.
If this were a thread on East/Southeast Asia and he was white or Asian, I’d say go for it and bring the wife and kids. It’s really safe for a white person over there so long as you don’t frick with the Golden Triangle. Saudi Arabia is not where you want to raise a kid under basically any circumstances.

Living in a place where women are seen as lower than dogs, and it’s encouraged to behead adulterers, rape victims, gays, and apostates? frick that. There are a lot of downsides exposing your kids to that mentality.

I saw the compensation package before you deleted it. Still doesn't tell us much being that his current state side rate isn't known. Is that only a $15k raise or a $115k raise?
If he can bring his family like you mentioned that would be great, except that its in SA.
That money for 4-5 years isn't an astronomical amount but it could set up his family to be financially stable for a long time if he does it right.
It's really up to him if he feels like it's a good decision for his family, but I know I wouldn't do it, I enjoy America too much.....and yes, I've traveled to and stayed in other countries, America wins...everytime.

I know I must seem like a broken record but if yall have any openings I would be very grateful.
OP SA is one of the least desirable overseas gigs but if the money is right I would give it a go most likely.
