Some larger firms have bought into LA the last several years. I can’t imagine their new LA outposts can charge the same rates / level of work that offices in NE / west coast can charge.
We vary our rates by what that particular market can support

Human-facing law can't be replaced by AI. The problem is fewer and fewer cases go to trial these days, even in jury trial-loving Texas. It's even more miniscule if you're only talking civil.
My point is being lost in the fact where you have some Judges that rule one way and judges will rule another way just based on the client, judicial bias, or petitioner.
See the President Trump and the cases against him and the administration while flip the script to a Democrat and the court takes a blind eye depending on the judge.
That is truly a problem in the judiciary not every case is heard and decided in the same manner, some judges will automatically rule against a case just because of their own judicial bias.

Agree. Human bias in judges and juries is the biggest variable in litigation work. It's definitely true in Louisiana. It's great when you win but absolutely enraging when you lose.
AI judges are fun to think about, but politically that is a pipe dream. I wish our state court system would adopt an ecm/ecf system and decide everything on the briefs the way the feds do. If I never waste another morning of my life at rule day, I'll be a happy man.

What keeps the partners in the higher markets from complaining?

Usually there are compensation variations. Lawyers in higher rate markets make more. Lawyers in lower rate markets make less, unless they can bill at the same rate as the higher rate markets.

Again, in my hypothetical future, the system would incorporate specific types of arbitration at the outset and you wouldn't even have the option to get in front of a judge, for those reasons.

I will be long gone by then.

And AI will have no clue about that. It cannot know that Judge Boudreaux (hypothetical name) and T-Boy went to Jesuit together or what that means. It will not have access to the telephone conferences with judges in plaintiffs' country in which the defense lawyer is told that anything the plaintiff files is going to be granted.

In your future we are in chaos praying that our shitty UBI checks can cover non-government cheese for the month.

Profit allocations
Using leverage, lower rates mean less profit even accounting for lower expenses.

I'm not saying I want this. I'm saying I think for these areas of law I think something similar is inevitable with how the corporations paying these legal bills will be changing, generally.
*ETA: It's not just lawyers. Just saw this thread on the money board:

It is NOT for everyone. Hell, I would not even recommend it for most people. Some really smart people are not good lawyers. Some dumbasses are. It's a weird profession.
Agree. Lawyers, along with many other professionals (i.e. doctors), are bad at running a business
