If you're interested in that Air France flight 447 crash, there was an awesome NOVA documentary on it that I watched on Netflix a while ago...if it's still there, I would highly recommend it.
I'll look for it. I've read about several crashes. Don't know why but it interests me.

The tickets that were bought with the two stolen passports were bought at the same time.
Really looks suspicious. Granted they could have just been people trying to get into other countries illegally. Its starting to be too much of a coincidence.
Apparently a lot of people in Asia have fake passports. Talking to a friend whose flown through Malaysia, and surrounding countries, he said he would be surprised if there wasn't at least one person on every flight with a fake passport.

It's cause we Asians all look the same.

But these weren't fake passports. They were stolen.

At first I was very suspicious of the two passports, but increasingly my gut says it may have just been two people trying to start new lives. Who the hell knows but I am miffed about how they can't find the plane. I mean the US knows when someone shits in a foreign country, I can't believe NORAD wouldn't track every flight.

The stolen passports are of European countries, so I'm sure it won't be a case of Asians using these, but more likely Middle Eastern types.

Umm... there's a difference?

just saying a case of Al Qaeda involvement is more likely.
and yes, I can easily tell the difference from Malaysians and Iranians.

If you don't know the difference you are a bigger idiot than you pretend to be.

Also...the Malaysian Air Force seems to think the 777 was attempting to turn around just before the plane disappeared on radar.

Dammit the stupid in this thread is ridiculous.

I just don't understand how the frick an airplane disappears. It's the 21st fricking century! I mean, sure, the ocean is a big place. But are there really still planes without GPS, tracking devices, emergency transmitters, anything?! Are there still planes that can lose ALL communication with anyone anywhere? Planes that are neither tracked nor communicated with?! . . . It's a crazy thought that I could be on board a plane, no one would have any idea where I was, and no one on the plane could have any communication whatsoever with the outside world.
ETA: Yes, I'm a little upset about it.

I've not followed this story closely at all, so please have mercy if this has already been discussed or eliminated as a possibility:
Any chance the plane lost cabin pressure, a la the Payne Stewart plane, and just kept flying until it crashed in some weird obscure location?

It is possible, but if that were to happen one would think that autopilot would have flown the plane a while further. Many different things could have happened to the plane. Mechanical failure, pilot error, terrorism, hell, pilot suicide has happened before. If there was a catastrophic loss of flight controls, the pilots may not have had a chance to issue a mayday because they were preoccupied with trying to regain control of the aircraft. As far as information goes, the recovery operation is basically a military operation at this point, so info is not going to come out as fast as if news chopper 6 were hovering about.

Wouldn't oxygen masks deploy in that situation?
Posted on 3/9/14 at 11:11 am to Topwater Trout
Yes but at 38,000 feet there isn't really enough time to react.
That wouldn't explain losing radar contact with them, though.

Are they taking samples from the oil slicks? I would think it's fairly easy to match it to the fuel/oil in a passenger jet.

LINK
They think they've found the debris including what looks like a door in this picture. To be confirmed of course. Ships are on their way to check.
From WSJ where I found link above:

The fragments were believed to be a composite inner door and a piece of the tail, Vietnam's ministry of information and communication said in a posting on its website. They were located about 50 miles south-southwest of Tho Chu island.
