You don't have to be a grunt on the rig floor. Logistics or clerking can start off around $300/ day as a w-2 employee. I listed a company in a previous post.

You have to be in decent physical shape.

i'm interested in environmental shite really. i know there are lots of laws and compliances. who should i look to work for?

They do on some production platforms. I've used a swing rope probably 15 times to get on locations when I was in the gulf.
