Well it was fricking 1995 and the subject was at speed. did you expect 4k? 
There's nothing else that it could be. The post said he was decapitated and dismembered. What else could possibly be located in the driver's seat of that car at that moment?

Just highlighting the “I’m not going to post the photos here” comment(s) are silly. There’s nothing about a single one of those photos that look like anything other than a bad car wreck. And as you pointed out, which was my initial point, because the photo was taken at speed in 1995 with poor resolution, it’s impossible to know exactly what you’re looking at unless you’re reading a caption.
Nothing at all even gory about that pic. Meh.

You're right that it isn't one of the more gory pictures you could find....but not a lot of people have seen pictures of someone that's been decapitated. Realize that we're on a sports message board.....not 4chan.
The picture itself wasn't only what was rough. It's that plus thinking about exactly what it looked like to the guy in the other car or the track officials.

Nobody casually looking at that picture would have come to that conclusion, IMO. In fact, we’re not even certain that’s what we’re seeing. Lots going on in that pic.

Exactly - I’ve been looking up the crash since I read about it on the thread - and I’m not saying it’s not a terrible crash - but you don’t instinctively know that he possibly has only one hand left and it’s just a torso
I’ve read a lot of things related to the crash - that Phillips’ head was still in his helmet and they found it at the entrance in pit road and that one of his hands was stuck in the fence. I guess since the video from back then is pretty bad - I can’t really tell
