I went to Rio Vista. Mystic was our sister camp but RV cabins are high on a hill and no flood water would ever reach them. I hope Mystic comes back. I wasn't aware they were planning to close for good.

Someone I used to date and am still friends with was a mystic camper and counselor. It's a little bit cultish. They're more devoted to mystic than to their high school or college alma mater. There's quite a bit of drama between the pro and anti reopening factions and indirectly, the victim families. There's a private alumni Facebook group and at one point someone was screenshotting posts and sending them to a
blogger on the "anti" side.

They really just need to close it down

I was hoping the State would purchase the Mystic property and build a lasting memorial. People will be camping in that area for another two hundred years or more. They need the memorial for all who died.
And then Camp Mystic announced they were opening for business in 2026.

the new part of the camp is still opening for 2026. the old camp, Cypress, which had the deaths is not this year.

It's a beautiful area. Catastrophic flooding occurred in the 1980s as well; so the risk pattern is there. They are justified in moving the cabins and structures to higher ground where they can, and investing in the monitoring and warning hardware.

I thought Cypress was the newer section. It back off of the River and up Cypress Creek some.
The original camp Mystic was officially called Mystic at Guadalupe or something like that after the Cypress location opened.

Central TX in summer is a miserably hot place, and the rivers flowing over rocks in narrow canyons offer greatly appreciated relief if you get up very close. Tragically, some people in the camp business didn't know enough about flash floods.
