Just talked to a buddy. The guy that died is his good friend. Originally from Haynesville but moved to Atlanta a while back to join the Fire Department. He is survived by 5 year old triplets. Very sad indeed.

Did the driver of the car not see the bicyclists? I always slow down when I am about to drive past a cyclist to make sure they know I am there and usually move more to my left to make sure we are far apart. If a car is coming in the other direction I will slow down until I can move over some. I often fear the cyclist could fall just as I am passing them.

This makes you a decent human being. As a cyclist as a husband, I'll say THANK YOU!
People demonized cyclists to the point where they take the human out of the picture. They get SO angry that that had to slow down for half of a second while driving. They do stupid shite to intimidate cyclists, not thinking that they are putting another human being's life in danger. We are just obstacles. Objects. Not people to those motorists for some reason. And that scares me.
Anyway. Thank you.

The man driving the car was either blind or stupid? I am going with stupid. How do you not see 4 bicyclists? GMAFB!

As sad as this is, you don't know shite about what happened. No need to trash talk anyone at this point.

It's a four lane highway and the four bikes were in the right line, and so was the car. Thats not knowing shite.
At the absolute least it shows piss poor judgement on the drivers part to not get in the other lane.

on a normal road, the biker should not be overtaking the car to the inside right anyways, that drives me nuts when I see other bikers doing that
This. I had some biker tap on my window to remind me he was there while I was waiting to take a right. I rolled it down and asked why he was trying to pass me at the red light. He just said he had the right of way and went through the red light.
All types of morons driving and riding.

You also don't know enough to say it was poor judgement on the drivers part as well. This is why people hate on internet cyclists. Y'all always assume it's the driver being stupid. I'm not saying the cyclists did something stupid, but an unfortunate accident could have just happened that didn't involve either party having poor judgment. But you cyclists refuse to acknowledge that and are always on the offensive towards the drivers. It gets old.

Not to be an a-hole, but you have one bad experience with a cyclist, and surely they all must be assholes. How many idiot drivers do you come into contact on a daily basis? I bet the percentage of idiots driving cars is a hell of a lot higher than riding bikes.
As I said before, I and about 20 other riders got buzzed by some a-hole in a truck on our way to franklinton in the Tour de Cure a few years ago. This is an organized ride, complete with police and motorcycle escorts. There was a cop at the front of our pace line, lights flashing. The Chef is a very popular cycling route, so seeing bikes out there is pretty common. This ain't exactly riding down Perkins at 5 on a Tuesday.
Hell, I was running on the road the other day and got honked at by some a-hole in a car that had to momentarily slow down to allow traffic to pass so he buzz by me. How miserable of a son of a bitch must you be to do shite like that?

He didn't say that, and you're part of the problem. Look at the giant leap you made off a comment that wasn't even insulting all bikers.

It's been perpetrated in this thread, and just about every thread on cycling that ever gets started on the OT.

State law requires a car give a cyclist three feet. When cyclists are legally in the right lane of traffic, it is poor judgement not to give them as much room as safely possible.
I know enough to say that is more likely because I know the area. My thoughts on this specific accident have nothing to with a failure to acknowledge their errors on the road so save that shite. Both drivers and cyclist break the law, but in this specific incident, being a non heavily commuted part of the day, with the sun directly above you and having a group of four cyclists to not see them as a driver is complete incompetence.
It is harder to see the color of a traffic light then it would be to see this group. If he did see the group and didnt get over into the left lane (whether it means he had to slow down or accelerate to do so), it just means he acted completely irresponsibly.

The driver could come out and admit to hitting them intentionally and people on the PT will still want to mentioned about the commuters that run stop signs.
frick, we get it, we know alot of cyclists break the law. I even eluded to it earlier today by mentioning the possibility that the cyclist unexpectedly tried to turn around causing the accident.
It doesn't mean that when an accident looks like the fault of an incompetent or negligent driver that cyclists never do anything wrong. If add'l details surface putting the cyclist at fault, I'll be right here saying I presumed incorrectly.

Again, you don't know what happened, but you're sure the guy didn't give space already. You and elprez can have your little bicyclist circle jerk, y'all are doing nothing to help your group's image.

Yes, because he was in the right lane and so were the cyclists. That was confirmed. That means he tried to pass the cyclists and stayed in the same lane as them when trying to pass them, OR it means he never saw them at all. Either negligence or incompetence....how can you not see this?
There was another fricking lane which the driver could have gotten into, but didn't.
I don't care about my image, I care about my life and the lives of those I train and race with and against. My goal is education and tolerance on both sides.

I agree and acknowledge that there are plenty of cyclists that don't exercise good judgement. But as someone who rides and runs pretty regularly, I hate seeing these threads. Even when someone makes a thread asking questions about getting into the sport, it invariably degenerates into this thread.
As a cyclist, I try to keep as aware of my surroundings as humanly possible. There was a guy that got killed on the Trace last year because he zoned through a cross street without yielding at the stop sign and got hit by a car.
I regularly see people do stupid stuff around me while riding and running. People forget that in bike vs car, car wins everytime, often with tragic results.
