it's easy when it's this example
but this example becoming the bright line rule opens up pandora's box. it's easy to make flash decision making when given an example such at the one these dumbfricks presented. what happens when it's a video of somebody calling something gay? or saying that we are born a particular sex and gender roles flow from that sex? or you say you got gyp'd and a gypsy takes offense? or you're accused of saying a "coded" word, which is as expansive as the imagination of a person can be?
I think society is moving away from this sort of language being "acceptable". The flip side of the coin is that by not sending a message you set a precedent that we tolerate hate speech and the slippery slope can slide the other direction.

However, it is also true that OU has set an interesting precedent here. When and if some black students get caught making racist statements or threats against white people - what then? Nothing? Make them attend racial sensitivity classes? Expel them too? That will be a powder keg...
Not really. Apparently the kids aren't fighting their expulsion. Should a situation as you described above ever arise - all they have to do is fight the expulsion through proper channels (which are outlined in the link I posted on page 3 of this thread).

Would that be enough to make you quit whining about it?

Now if white people want to go through 300 years of slavery and being degraded in order for honkey and cracker to have the same sting of the nword then so be it.
White people enslaved and degraded their own for far longer than 300 years...

Free speech also has consequences. I'm free to say what I want, but there are repercussions. These poor white victims utilized their right to free speech. They also violated the student code of conduct and are being expelled.
I don't think you get the jist of "free speech". "Free speech with repercussions" is like saying you're free to commit murder but hey, you're going to death row if you do.
"Free speech" shouldn't have these types of institutional or governmental repercussions involved.

This is not a free speech issue.
They just can't do that while also enjoying the privilege of a taxpayer subsidized public education.
Tinker v. Des Moines
This is absolutely an issue of free speech. OU may not have violated the constitution because of some of the carved out exceptions for public schools but it's not clear cut.

Not yet at least. Their own code of conduct says they get a hearing....
With the legal scholars weighing in that expulsion is over the reach of OU, dont be surprised if things happen to "evolve"

It was funny when I said it originally a while back.
It wasn't funny when you said it in the other thread 10 minutes ago.
It certainly isn't funny this time in this thread.

"Assuming" they are off campus and they are not part of a fraternity subsidized by the school, they are not representing it.
I think, if you are gonig to be on the up and up, this video should absolutely be investigated by the University and these kids expelled too. They went the extra mile of simulating with a gun for Christ sake.

while I'm glad the fraternity was shut down, not sure about this. Especially this quickly.

speech restrictions are a dangerous road....especially if based on ephemeral reactions like feelings.

Nah.. I'm too important.
I'm sure there's some around somewhere we could spare.
I nominate the hipsters.

Speech does not have to be "acceptable" to be covered by the first amendment. In fact, most of the speech that has raised first amendment issues in the past has been deemed "unacceptable" by most. That's why there is an issue to begin with.
