Coach Gill at Tara for me. “Put your hands on the weight bench baw”

Both paddles and weight belts in school. Our coach is the one who handled the paddling. He was a starting DH for Arkansas in the 80s and could get that thing moving.
Much preferred the weight belt over the paddle

Our Jr High coach would pass out licks for grades. Two licks for any F or a U in conduct and one lick for a D. We all gathered around in the locker room to laugh. He would be arrested today for it. Good times.

My brothers and I used to have this debate all the time. What was worse, the paddle at school or the belt at home? I always said the belt. But now I think I was comparing apples and oranges. The paddle at school was 3-5 licks over your jeans or shorts. The belt was as much as dad thought you needed it, and there was those couple times that I even got that on my bare skin. So yeah the belt was worse!

Totally agree. The paddle at school was child’s play. Walking home, knowing the school had called my house, was the worst. I knew as soon as my dad got home he was gonna whip my arse with the belt.

My daddy was a coach and my mama drove a school bus. I couldn’t get away with anything behavior or report card related. My mama once suspended my brother off of her own bus for breaking a window killing a yellow jacket.

And therein lies the problem. We behave because we were terrified of getting paddled by Mr. Rowley. I’d not for that threat of discipline, we might have destroyed the school. It kept us in line that’s for damn sure. And that’s exactly what kids need. The little soft shits have no fear of repercussions these days.

Coach Campbell - Lafayette Elementary School - early 60s - the man was about 6’7” - he walked around school with a custom made paddle that was about 18” long. I never got paddled but when he hit a kid you could hear it all over school. It had holes in it and a kid’s butt looked like it was hit with buckshot !

My school bus driver used to whip kids with a motor belt.

Yeah, right 8 Mile. You’re probably “Clarence’s lives at home with his parents. And Clarence’s parents have a real nice marriage”.
Don’t act like you’re hard because you got a B on your report card once and had to miss chess club for a week.

No paddling, gay bear, 80-84 was hit by Brother Gordian 1X (Less than most others), Brother Harold1X (Talking) and Brother Disciplinarian who walked into Coach Malpica’s class, slapped the desk, I picked up my head, grabbed my head slapped my head down and looked me in the eye and said, “Stay awake!” And walked out…so I never got paddled but I earned my time…

They were called licks where I’m from. So much so that it wasn’t even called a paddling. It was called “licks” or “three licks.”

We used to get "swats" or "licks", but I graduated in the early 90's. It's still legal in Texas, but few districts still do it to my knowledge. What's even sadder is that coaches can no longer use exercise as punishment. If you acted a fool when I was in school, your teacher would go talk to your coach and you'd begin practice with 400 yards of bear crawls to correct your behavior.

I got paddled once for arm wrestling at lunch.
It was Halloween, so I was dressed as Dracula.

Paddling doesn’t work.
My middle school Principal paddled so hard when the paddle landed tears shot out of your eyes.
Still, he gave me the option of 3 licks or 3 days in lunch detention. I always opted for the paddles. My reasoning: the paddle only stings for a few minutes, while putting me in a boring detention room took me away from my friends for 3 days that lasted more than an hour. It was simple math.

My kids still live this life.
I told the school I was 100% ok with my child receiving corporal punishment and to call me if they ever have a problem.

Yes. Parents have to agree to it.

Coach Lange at Sherwood Middle in BR had 3 of those paddles duct taped together into a super paddle for maximum force upon impact. It would hurt to sit down after a paddling from him.

and got no less than 15 paddlings in my 12 year school career.
Amateur numbers right there.....I got that many a month from about 1971-1981. They stopped around the 10th grade because they weren't sure we wouldn't turn them over our knees and whup their arse.
I took a bad hop of a ground ball to the Adams apple in a third grade PE softball game and, finding it shocking, fell to the ground and failed to make the out. My teacher, a woman about 70 years old, flew out of the dugout and proceeded to kick me repeatedly while lying on the ground trying to catch my breath and calling me everything but a child of god for making an error and letting a baserunner get on in a game that was like 25-24 in our favor. Teachers pummeling kids in 1972 wasn't unusual but this one was particularly violent, to the point that the other kids only made a few snide remarks about my athleticism and some actually turned away....and I never said a word to an adult at the school or to my parents because I knew, without any doubt, any adult would ask why I did not make the play at first base????? There were 4 other teachers present when this happened and not a single one made any effort to stop it....I ain't sure at least one other got in a few kicks, I was distracted by the inability to breath at the time. I dam sure didn't make any more errors when I was in that woman's class....
