I'm not a homer when it comes to pit bulls, but in all honesty, pit bulls aren't bad dogs. That trait comes from when the owner does a poor job at teaching right from wrong or if it comes from a bad bloodline. Pit bulls are great dogs but not every who has one can take care of one, which is why you see stories like this one.

From the article, it appears the dog was kept as a house pet. I wonder what-if anything-provoked the attack. As I've written before, too many pit bulls are not only stronger than their owners ... but smarter as well. This is not a good thing.

no they aren't

if they were "great dogs" they wouldn't consistently kill small children

when was the last time you read an article about a beagle killing a kid?

if we have all the "it's the owner, not the dog" people, is there any type of punishment for the owners? like manslaughter or murder charge?
Why would the owner get charged if it's her own dog killing her own child? If anything the dog gets put to sleep and that's it. May ban the owner from possession of another dog but the owner wouldn't be charged for murder or anything.

I can only speak from personal experience. We have a half pit-bull/half golden retriever, and he is a nice dog. He is just big and strong.

Sorry but you lack education if you think the whole breed needs to go. Do you not think a dog is a product of its enviroment the same way humans are? I understand as a parent you are concerned but be please be logical.

Some breeds of dog are products of their environment. But some breeds are just violent. It's their nature. It's how they're born.

When people apply this argument to gay people they are ridiculed.

because every time these threads come up, we get so many "it's not the dog, it's the owner" responses

so it seems like most people put the blame on the owner, so why not hold them accountable for the death?

Not saying they don't have some that are good dogs but even good dogs can bite when provoked. The problem is when they do attack it is very hard to get them to stop the attack. Their jaws can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. With little kids around I think it's irresponsible for the parents to own them. Little kids usually don't know how to treat animals.

Do you have any knowledge on a pit bull? Do you not remember that most of these pit bulls were BRED to fight? Beagles weren't so you can't even make a case for them.

I don't think the "whole breed needs to go". But I do think there is a serious problem with the breed that needs to be addressed.

I remember that Chows were very popular in the early 80's (we had a breeding bitch) but once people saw how vicious and dangerous they were, now very few people still own or breed them. Why is the Pit Bull different though in that despite the ever mounting evidence of how dangerous of a breed they are, people still insist on not only owning them, but also allowing them free access to small children? I just don't understand it.

well put.

and also bringing them to dog parks. i have basically banned all dog parks except one in Montana that is huge and on the Clark Fork river. The other day though my gf and i were walking my Aussie mix and Cur mix and passed the neighborhood park in decatur, ga.

i've never liked this park. it's full of these carpetbagging urbanite gen-Y nihilists who are a large part of the problem with our society, but i digress.

one of said nihilists almost got her dog killed because she couldn't control it from running across the street to get to the park. I quickly opened the dogpark gate as we passed by, to let that lucky dog and his sibling dog--a pitbull--in before they risked their lives further.

For some idiotic reason i decided to give the park another try to just throw the ball.

inside the little unleashing area, the fricking pitbull attacked my Aussie mix. Luckily, my dog is a secret jiu-jitsu badass and fended him off.

So I let them out into genpop, and about 5 minutes later, the pit again attacked my dog, who was minding his own business playing with a ball. I hit the pit with a leash and tackled him, while the tatted up nihilist C-bag just sat there. never said a word.

She'd just admitted to me that she can't control her dogs without her husband and yet she brings them to a dogpark to attack other dogs.

point: dog owners are the problem.

don't even get me started on this. Still can't believe how people accept the "born gay" thing as fact, even without proof.
