He apparently had replaced a couple of parts and was taking it up for a test flight.

A guy who was shot down twice in Vietnam and survived only for it to end like this. Very sad.

at 73 he was pretty young for that, grunt? warrant officer at the very tail end?

Once was in a plane and once was in a helicopter from what I'm told, so he may have not been a pilot in the war, but shot down during transport. I'm getting this from my girl who works in the industry. Manuel his her biggest client and she knew him well.
