There was a shooting in front of him at the parking lot of Spruce while his was packing his car to evacuate a hurricane. He saw a 15 year old kid get gunned down outside of Freds. He had a close friend gang-raped and left for dead on the road. Had another acquaintance through a professional club get shot up near Red Stick Social (which is where his fraternity hosts many events) ...
Your son must be the unluckiest person in the world.
With all of that, I understand your hesitancy, but that is an extreme abnormality for him to know people involved in all of those instances. LSU itself is pretty safe, but you are correct that there are some seedy areas around it that you just need to avoid or be very careful in. But the vast majority of kids have completely normal experiences there. I have one at LSU now, and outside of a couple of instances I feel that she is pretty safe and secure. I have a nephew there as well in one of the newer dorms on the north side of campus. And outside of some car break-ins he doesn't feel unsafe at all over there.

Not smart enough to learn a trade, guess he’ll have to go to college

see above.
My son isn't unlucky, but he does have a large social circle and is active on campus.
That said:
I don't want the thread to get off on a tangent, I'm genuinely interested in what colleges I should consider in addition to LSU.

Of seedy characters it seems.
The north side of campus definitely has its issues and if you feel strongly that your other son shouldn’t be put in a dorm there, that’s understandable. But if they’re in any of the inner dorms or apartments south of campus 99% of this shite should be a nonissue.
If your son can’t get a decent ACT and has B’s in high school it’s likely a useless conversation anyway. He’s probably going to be commuting to U of H after his first year anyway, no matter where he starts

He sounds like he has academic issues.
Are you sure going away to school is best?
Would he do better living structured at home and going UofH for a bit?

LSU was dangerous when I went ages ago…just is what it is.
Two summers ago we drove to Georgia, Ole Miss, Auburn, Florida, and Arkansas (son was keen on going to an SEC school). Should have gone to South Carolina too. It was very fun to make a ritual out of each visit. Drove around the towns circling campus, checking out the housing and local restaurants. Y’all will enjoy it no matter which schools are the focus.

I'm not sure I'd describe a B average student as having academic issues

I'd like to show my middle son some alternatives. He's a B student, private catholic school in Houston. Athlete and has a job. Terrible ACT scores, but we are in tutoring for that now to bring them up (think low 20's). I've got Ole Miss, Miss State, OU, Texas Tech.. What options am I missing?
The pussy is easier to crush at your mid level schools.
Sam Houston, UH
UH is awesome now.

Youre not going to get good advice here. This board is overrun by nerds and drama loving simps.

Is college right for him?
What does he want to do with his life and get a degree in? Do not send an average kid to college, just to do it. He might have a much more exciting and financially lucrative path out there waiting for him, that does not involve four more years of schooling.

And a low ACT score. High school is all about effort, especially private school. Sending a kid 4-8 hours off on their own who has displayed some bit of lack of effort is a gamble. May be fine, may have a 1.0 first semester

Should be teaching him a trade.

I agree with this sentiment in general. He doesn't know what he wants to do he's 17. even if he did know he likely wouldn't end up doing that anyways.
I want him to start his life with as many possibilities as I can give him. His college account is fully funded.
Plus I believe the 4 year (away from home) college experience is a great way to learn some autonomy and make some connections, without being thrown into the sharks. And its a fantastic, fun experience that I look back on with great memories. If I can afford to do so, why not?

I watched that story play out so many times. Most end up “fine” as in they end up back home at the commuter school, get some bullshite degree, and some bullshite job.
A few ended up getting into drugs and/or alcohol and are no longer with us.

Sounds like you’ve already made up your son’s mind for him honestly

I’m with Mingo here.
Unless my child has shown a tendency to excel I’m not dumping tons of money into a bad investment.
I would explain this to my son or daughter.
UH,Texas state, Sam Houston , UL, McNeese are all fine schools.
Or you make him go the Rudy route. Start local and prove it.

Hoping to bring it up to the 20’s? What is he at now?
What kind of job he has now? I say get him a job in the oilfield. If that don’t get him to focus on school nothing will. Then maybe get him in trades instead of college
