understandable. a complaint may do something. it is almost assuredly just pure protocol, though

I don't see any reason for a nurse or doctor to ask this.
You don't see a single reason why that question would be asked?

That's good to hear. Don't blame yourself. There are all kinds of what if's that could keep you from moving on with your life if you let them

The tone in which it was asked could be very telling...if it was with a manner of disbelief i could understand it being asked.

n terms of gathering facts, the questions should likely be asked as to avoid any pretense of "bias", should it have to be used in court.
this is true, too
what you think you need at the time, and how evidence has to be collected, are 2 vastly different thing (and because of the emotional biases being presented due to the violation you just suffered).

Thanks for the kind words.
BTW, know how to kill a thread debating the finer points of rape?
Tell a personal rape story.

No. Not after she's already come into the hospital saying she's been raped and consented to being examined. A doctor or nurses's role is to administer care and collect evidence. Why ask that question? Maybe it is a part of the standard interview. I'd be curious to know.

I could be completely off base but I would think the hospital staff is obligated to call the police to come investigate if they are doing a rape kit on someone.

Thanks for sharing your story. I am glad you are recovering with help from others.
Obviously, rape is very complex in the minds of the victims. In your situation, you perfectly describe the "zip less frick." The very thing that is the fantasy of some women. The stranger moves you away from the crowd, bends you, enters you, and walks away. You were frozen and silenced by fear, just as another woman may be done the same with excitement. Of course you were raped, you know that better than anyone. Does you rapist know he raped you?
In the case of Jacob Witz, he clearly knew what was going on, as he tried to remove all evidence of his crime.

Only if a patient consents.

let me just add that rape is a fascinating societal meme. it didn't exist (as we perceive it) even like 150 years ago
i am not blessing rape (slavery was an accepted societal meme 175 years ago) or anything, but just the concept itself and its development, etc is an interesting study of society and morality

so its not the same as gunshot wounds i guess

Because rape is a legal term, and I was clearly there stating I had been raped, I thought it was very odd for the nurse to ask this question. I am here because I am saying I have been raped. The way he asked felt like a personal judgement. The "or not" tagged on the end of the sentence was offensive, like he didn't believe me. He could have said it in a much more professional manner. I understand a males sensitivity to the subject, I just wasn't prepared for the attitude of disbelief. I do understand this nurse didn't know me from any other person, and I am sure he sees a lot of bullshite.
ETA: If the patient says no, then no authorities are contacted.

had you told that specific employee you were raped?
i mean when you get sick, you have to answer the same questions pretty often at different stages of the treatment

So this guy is still out running around raping people? I am confused. Why do some report rape then refuse to press charges. I think that's why the attendant was confused at the hospital.

Yes, he was the initial interview. I don't blame him, but his attitude contributed to the confusion and blame. Look, I haven't been to a doctor (except annual visit) in like a decade. I tend to just "deal" with things. I was just going to go to work and forget about it, but a (male) friend brought me to the hospital. I was on anti-AIDS meds for a month, got shot up full of penicillin, etc. It SUCKED. Everything about it. So, as someone who just internally deals with shite, it was hard to reach out for help and be met by such an ugly attitude. I get it, but it still sucked.
