Nola Grade school is late 70’s and early 80’s.
No pouch milk but Dutch Chocolate in small cartons was pretty good.

those yellow straws sucked. I usually just bit the corner of the bag and sucked the milk out.

Seems they started around 1992 in middle schools. I remember they sent out water filled pouches to "practice" on before doing the full roll out.
Yall had to practice how to use a liquid pouch?

We had them in Shreveport in the 90s. I would routinely stick the straw through both sides of the bag and have to use the straw to drink my milk from one of the compartments on the food tray. We used to blow them up and stick the straw through the other side to make a balloon. One time the kid next to me did this and he dropped it on the ground. I stomped on it and it popped, sounded like a gunshot in the cafeteria. I got in trouble

I don't know if "had to" is the term.
Was probably some sort of "this is how it will work" promotional thing. Proof of concept or whatever.

I remember them well.specifically when they showed us how to put the straw in.it was 1986. The principal, Mr.Benoit, at North Lewis elementary in New Iberia had all of 3rd and 4th grades in the cafeteria. He did an admirable job of trying to explain it but it didn’t help to prevent the huge mess from most of us boys squirting each other with tepid milk!

You were dealing with 5, 6, 7-year-olds that had never drunk milk, or anything, from a plastic pouch via a straw you had to jab into it. As an adult you know to cover the back opening of the straw with your thumb to prevent liquid from shooting out and to create some tension in the pouch to make it easier to insert the straw. But as a little kid who has never done it you don't know any of that. I promise you, had there been no practice sessions there would have been milk squirting everywhere and leaks from kids jamming 10 holes in loose bags.
I didn't recall the "practice sessions" until the poster mentioned it
Even as a little kid I remember thinking "WTF was wrong with the paper mild cartons?"

Yep

While silly, it goes to show you the innovation that was present in our youth. Who would've imagined the ideas kids would come up with if you gave them a plastic bag, a capri sun straw and a lot of time.
Boredom was often the mother of invention as a kid.
You usually had someone once a week take his buddy's pouch, to hold up it with his own at his chest and shout..."milk, milk, lemonade...the other side is where fudge is made"

St Tammany public schools had em for sure
Former MHS Skipper reporting in to say this is true.
The catholic elementary school Mary Queen of Peace also had bagged milk in the late 90s.
Can also confirm. One would always bust in the crate to make it smell even more like shite in the cooler.

You'd insert straw, drink milk, reinflate bag to full, then stick the straw through to other side, then stomp on it to make a loud ,
Satisfying POP!

Nope, had mini cartons of milk and it was always an awesome day when you got to pick chocolate milk instead of 2%.
Especially when the chocolate milk was frozen and slushy. Always dug around in the bottom try to find a slushy one.

Chocolate milk in a bag FTW

We started having pouches in 5th grade, so 1989? Before that was the small cartons.

They would throw an orange juice in there every now and then. It was like Christmas
